Seniors Advantage

Once upon a time...you were considered a "big hitter." But
now - you have trouble just getting the ball past the 150
marker on par 4's

Once upon a time...you could hit practically every green in
regulation. But now - you have to scramble just to make par
- or worse - BOGEY.

Once upon a time...you were a "contender" for the club
championship. But now...you're just one of the "dinosaurs"
of the club

Once upon a time...you were the up-and-coming hot shot at
the club...one that everyone wanted to play with. But now -
you're just some duffer that everybody wants to play
through on the long holes.

Or Even Worse...you were never that good to begin with, and
you're tired of all the instruction out there that's for
young golfers only...and...you want to finally be the best
that you can be.

Richard's Quick Tip

Hit a Home Run To Learn How To Rotate Your Forearms

Get a baseball bat and take a swing as if you're trying to hit
A home run. Hold your position on the follow-through and
notice how your forearms have rotated fully. Your follow
through in the golf swing should be very similar.

Now try hitting a home run without rotating your forearms. What
Probably would result is a pop-up to right field. A golfer with
Tension in his forearms also cannot get the clubface back to square.
The result is golf's answer to a right-field pop-up...the common slice.
Keep your forearms free of tension and remember to rotate fully.
You'll hit a lot more home runs.

Golf Potpourri
by
Mac Stevenson

Early Slumps are Common

If your transition from winter to early spring 2008 is not
going well, don't be discouraged. After not playing much
for three or four months, it's difficult to regain the
groove you had after a full summer of frequent playing and
practicing.

All golfers--from Tiger Woods to high handicappers--go
through periods when they cannot play close to their
potential, no matter how hard they try. In golfers'
vernacular, this is called "playin' bad" or simply a
"slump."

Golf is a crazy game. When you're playing well, everything
seems easy and you're convinced that you finally have the
secret and you'll play well from then on. But when your
game turns sour, you decide that it's all over and you'll
never get it back. It can drive you batty.

When you go into one of those horrendous periods when you
play bad day in and day out, the first thing to do is try
and determine the main culprit that's causing poor scores.
Is it driving, fairway woods, full irons, chips and
pitches, putting, or a combination of all the above?

If you're off to a really bad early spring start, chances
are you're having trouble with more than one facet of your
game. Another factor can be problems in your personal life
off the golf course; when this happens, it's almost
impossible for it to not affect your golf game.

Putting is the most common cause of a prolonged period of
poor play. There's an old saying among golfers that your
putter can eat the head right off your driver. In other
words, if you start putting bad, you'll start hitting other
shots poorly by trying too hard to make up for the inept
putting. Conversely, if you sink a couple of putts, you
can't wait to get to the next tee and play another hole.

Unfortunately, there's no easy solution to putting woes.
Even the most skilled pros go through putting slumps that
knock them out of tournament after tournament. And it can
last for a long time. Putting is tied so closely to the
mental makeup of your game that it's difficult to snap out
of a bad-putting stretch where your scores mount. All you
can do is keep practicing and try not to put too much
pressure on yourself while you're on the course--easier
said than done. But, if you stay with it, you'll
eventually snap out of your putting slump.

Putting on the rug at home is beneficial; it won't improve
your touch because of the difference in actual greens and
your living-room rug. But working on your stroke in the
privacy of your home will help. You can develop a rhythm
and smooth stroke that will transfer to the golf course.

Little adjustments can help you claw your way out of the
bad-playing pit. What about your warm-up routine?
Sometimes a drastic change can help you snap out of a
prolonged slump that is driving you up the wall. Try it
with no warm up; you won't want to stay with this, but it
might help to just go out to the course and take a few
swings on the first tee and start playing. Anything that
changes your mental outlook can help.

One thing that won't help is hitting so many balls on the
driving range that you're exhausted before you start the
round. If you're young and strong you might get away with
this, but the old codgers had best conserve most of their
energy before they play the course.

The best advice is don't get too excited when you're
playing well and don't get too low when things aren't
working the way you want them to. Just remember, it
doesn't take much to ruin the timing of a golf shot. No
one is going to play many rounds without hitting some bad
shots. Learn to take the bitter with the sweet and your
slumps will be less severe and of a shorter duration.

Don't take yourself too seriously. Golf should be fun
whether you're playing well or not. It's no secret that
it's more fun when you're playing your best, but there are
a lot of young men and women in a place called Iraq who
would be happy to trade places with you-- regardless of how
they played.

Richard's Quick Tip

Point Belt Buckle At Target For Accuracy

When you use your hands too much and not enough body
To slash at the ball, your accuracy is destined to diminish.
To reduce the influence of your hands, think of taking the
Club back with your shoulders and to swing through the ball so
That your belt buckle faces the target at the finish.

With this in mind, your hands should remain relatively inactive
And you'll increase the use of your body-along with the accuracy
Of your shots.

Issue 234: Wednesday - March 19, 2008

Hi Determined Golfer,

If you find this newsletter helpful, please te ll your friends, associates and golf instructor. Thanks for helping us grow.

"Keep Polishing Your Wheel"

If you are new to my newsletter, welcome aboard.

My mission is to help you lower your score by increasing your awareness of how your mind processes information and providing you with insights on how to improve your mental game.

It is important for my new subscribers to get up to speed as quickly as possible. If you tr uly desire to lower your score, read my book and listen to my CD (part one) before and (part two) after you play as well as read my mental tip newsletters.

Once you have done your homework, you will have laid the foundation to have one of the best mental games around. The next step is to continue to work on improving your mental game (polish your wheel) until these insights become an instinctive part of your mental makeup.

My advice to my old subscribers is to keep polishing your wheel if you want your scores to continue to fall. Since my mental tips are designed to enhance and reinforce your understanding of "The Mental Keys," keep reading them as well as rereading my book from time to time.

Some of my newsletters contain new tips and others repeat past tips to refresh your tape. If you keep polishing your wheel, your scores will continue to fall. I guarantee it!

Once in awhile, I send out a Golf Announcement to inform you of other golf products that will help you to polish your wheel. Please take a serious look at them.

Play well and keep polishing your wheel,

Michael Anthony

P.S. Once you read this section "Keep Polishing Your Wheel" several times, you can skip it in future newsletters and go directly to the "Golfers Locker Room Bulletin Board" for inspiring success stories or updates from me. After several repetitions, just seeing the words "Keep Polishing Your Wheel" will automatically remind you to keep working on improving your mental game.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

I am pleased to announce that you can listen to my mental golf tips weekly at GolfSmarterTips Podcast.

Dear Michael,

"We did not know how much more fun Golf can be with a sound mental game. Improving the process will automatically lead to a better and more relaxing game. Thanks for this great publication. Understanding your concept does not only help to improve the Golf Game, it's also a wonderful input for having a more successful life."

Best regards from Switzerland,

Here is what they had to say about "The Mental Keys":

"With Mental Keys, Michael Anthony a respected mental coach has not merely pumped out yet another mental publication into an already over-s aturated market. No, Mr. Anthony's Mental Keys can be described as an exceptional approach, which puts a highly complex system into an easy to learn step-by-step system. It is quite simply one of the most complete, detailed, and precise guides to improve the mental skills in Golf and in Life that I've ever seen.

"What makes it so much different than other mental skills improvement publications on the market?

"Mostly, it's the concentration of each and every element of successful mental constitution. It is a detailed step-by-step approach of all elements which influence the mental side of a Golfer. With Mental Keys, you'll learn more than the contents of an entire bookshelf of mainstream mental improvement and self-help publications d own at your local bookstore.

"I knew that the mental part of the Golf Game is quite important but I did not realize how important it is, before I read Michael Anthony's book. Off course, first you need a sound technique. But once you mastered the basics you will improve much faster with the right mental attitude.

"Bottom line?

"The Mental Keys" is simple, but it's not easy. It requires dedication and a lot of hard work to implement it. You might have to read the book several times and to listen to the CD before and after each round of Golf. But the reward is worth every effort.

"With the input from Mich ael Anthony's Mental Keys I can tap the full potential and play significantly more rounds in the 70s.

"If you are serious about lowering your score and about having more fun on the Golf course, we highly recommend this publication."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"What If I Miss?"

This is a continuation of my tip "Half Full or Half Empty?" which can be found in my private mental tip archive available to my newsletter subscribers.

If you believe that your glass is half full, you will have a higher level of chemistry than if you believe that your glass is half empty. As simple as this concept sounds, it can make the difference between making the shot or missing the shot because it makes the difference between whether your chemistry is high or low.

Assuming that your risk/reward ratio favors taking the shot at hand, you raise your chemistry by focusing totally on the probability of making the shot and expecting to make it if everything goes right. That's the key. You have to focus totally on expecting to make the shot and not even think about the probability of not making it.

Let's assume your glass was half full when you hit the ball, but you missed your target. Does your glass remain half full or does it become half empty? If you're mentally tough and realize that missed shots are a part of golf, you will keep if half full. If Old Man golf has his way, he will have you convinced that your glass is half empty before the round of golf is over.

Many golfers normally blame their mechanics when they miss a shot. Then they start making swing adjustments while they are playing. If they are not careful, they will end up changing their entire game before the round is over. Then they have to go to the driving range to find their swing.

What happens in many cases, it’s not their mechanics that were off. It was their mental s tate that was off because they started thinking that their glass was half empty. This changed their chemistry and caused their mechanics to be off. That’s why golfers can quickly regain their swing on the driving range before they finish hitting a bucket of balls.

Once they become relaxed and their chemistry improves, it allows their normal swing to return. Unfortunately, they go away thinking that they found their swing, instead of realizing that they found a glass that was half full.

If you know what your probability of success is and make allowances for your missed shots, you will be able to keep your glass half full when you are playing. Otherwise, you will start blaming your mechanics and make it easy for Old Man golf to ruin your day.

So the answer to the question "What if I miss?" is make sure that your glass is half full before you start changing your mechanics while you are playing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Bonus... When you order my book and CD, you will receive my new book Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips, which contains 75 of my previous mental tips. If you read a tip a day, you will be amazed at how much it will help you to keep polishing your wheel and shoot lower scores.

su per bonus

If you are not working on improving your mental game, you are playing golf with only half of the equipment. If you have not read The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf, your mental game will benefit greatly by seeing the whole picture instead of just pieces contained in these mental tips. My book gives you the tools to improve your mental game. My CD Polish the Wheel makes it much easier to keep using them.

"To develop a great mental game it's critical to realize that your mental state affects the chemistry of your brain which in turn affects your ability to perform. Then, it's just a matter of reprogramming your mind to optimize your chemistry so you can play in the zone."

I would like to thank Mr Joe DeLorenzo for taking the
Time to answer these questions for us!

Joe is available for private lessons in the Chicago area.
If you are interested, let me know.

Joe is a very good instructor and does an excellent job, so if you
Are having a problem, send it to me and he will answer your
questions

A Bit of Golf Trivia
Who owns the all time record for most consecutive
tournaments without missing a cut, who is second, and
how many tournaments each? (answers are below)

Joe,
I cannot find a Taylormade ladies 11 wood which I
would like to own. I assume this is because they only
make these in hybrid clubs now. I guess I will need a
hybrid with a loft of 25 degrees. My question is do I
hit the hybrid with the U swing the way you do a
fairway wood, or do you swing it like an iron? Thank
you so much.
Elva Delks

Hi Elva,
Wow, an 11 wood must have a lot more loft than 25
degrees, I would be afraid the ball would pop up and
hit me in the nose. Anyway, I have found that most
people are not very successful using a different swing
for fairway woods, except for maybe single digit
handicappers. If you are in that group you must be a
very good ball striker. If not, I would recommend
using the same swing for all fairway shots, which
would be to hit down at the ball as you would with an
iron.
Joe

Joe,
I have a golf rule question: Yesterday my friends and
I played golf and when one of my one friends hit his
drive the ball broke into several pieces. What is the
rule?
Mickey

Hi Mickey,
Under Rule 5-3, you are allowed to play the shot over
again with no penalty.

Joe,
I really am reluctant to spend a lot of money on
having my swing analyzed to see what types of shafts
might be best for me. Is there a more simple method to
figure this out? Also, what is likely to happen if I
use the wrong type of shaft?
Ned

Hi Ned,
One way would be to use the 150 yard shot as a
benchmark. If you usually use a 9 or 8 iron for that
distance without overswinging, then you probably
should use stiff shafts. If you use a 7 or 6 iron for
that distance, you probably should use regular shafts.
If you use a 5 iron or more, you might do better with
a more flexible Senior or Ladies shaft. The amount of
flex in a shaft will vary from one brand to another,
so the same amount of flex might be called stiff for
one brand and regular for another, so this can be
confusing. Sometimes you must ask yourself what is
most important to you, distance or accuracy. A more
flexible shaft may add distance along with wildness. A
stiffer shaft may make you more accurate, but with
less distance. To answer your last question about what
would happen if you use the wrong shaft for your type
of swing, a slower swing speed with a stiffer shaft
will produce lower shots with less distance. A higher
swing speed with a shaft that is too flexible will
produce higher and wilder shots. Try to attend demo
days at a driving range where you can compare results
from different types of shafts and brands, and see
what works best for you.
Joe

Question for the Evil Twin:
Jody, I was vacationing in Florida recently, and I was
freaked out by a large alligator sitting next to a
pond beside the fairway. My shot just missed him and
he turned to look in my direction. I have heard for
short distances that alligators can run faster than
humans. Luckily I was riding a fast cart that day, but
what if I was walking?
Answer: All you have to do is run faster than only
one other person in your foursome.

Answer to the above Trivia Question: Tiger Woods
holds the record at 142 (some had no cuts), followed
by Byron Nelson at 111. Ironically, it was at the
Byron Nelson Championship in 2005 where Tiger's streak
was broken.

Richard's Quick Tip

Start Swing With Hip Turn To Recapture Lost Distance

When golfers get beyond their 50th birthday, nature begins
to take its toll with a variety of ailments that work
against a good shoulder and hip turn. To help us senior
students recapture the full turn-and the distance it
provides-we should concentrate on starting the swing by
turning the right hip away from the ball. This rotation to
the right will bring along the left knee and also release
the left heel from the ground, making the proper weight
shift to the right almost automatic.

Golf Potpourri
by
Mac Stevenson

Plan Practice Strategy for Spring 2008

Old man winter has finally loosened his fierce grip as the
days grow longer and gradually warmer. Improbable as it
seemed a few weeks ago, the 2008 golf season is getting
closer. And it's a good time to begin planning your early
spring practice strategy. You will enhance your
opportunity for a fast start if you concentrate on your
short game--namely putting, pitch-, and chip shots.

Focusing on your short game early in the season has three
advantages: (1) This is the quickest way to improve your
scores; short shots separate the winners and losers. (2)
When cold weather intervenes, you can still spend a few
minutes on the practice green before you become chilled.
In other words, you won't lose everything you've gained
with early practice. (3) If it gets real chilly, you can
continue working on short shots and putting indoors.

There are two vital shots that every golfer can learn to
execute successfully: the chip shot and pitch shot.

Pitches and chips are more important to average players
because they hit fewer greens in regulation; consequently,
they have to depend on their short game more than highly
skilled players. This is particularly true for women and
older men who don't hit the ball as far as low-handicap
players.

Success begets success. Short shots are a part of the game
that all players can improve on. And you'll find that
improving your skill with short shots will help the rest of
your game because you'll become more confident. Average
players don't need great strength or extraordinary
coordination to become proficient around the green; they
just need to practice extensively while using the proper
fundamentals. And then they need to learn to concentrate
on these crucial shots during actual play. That's not
always easy.

If you develop a solid chipping and pitching game, it will
help your putting dramatically. Your putting won't
necessarily change, but you'll have a lot more easy putts
because your approach shots will be closer to the hole.
That's how you begin to shoot lower scores.

Using the proper fundamentals on these two shots is vital;
it's counterproductive to practice bad habits. By using
Richard's video ("Short Game Clinic") you can develop the
proper fundamentals, which aren't complicated. The
following instructions assume you're right-handed and
hitting off a level lie. You'll have to make adjustments
for uphill or downhill lies.

Chip Shot--Play this shot from the back of your
stance, close to even with your right foot. Keep your
weight primarily on your left foot and keep your hands
ahead of the ball. Take the clubhead back and up and
strike the ball with a slightly descending arc. Most
important of all, keep your head absolutely steady.

* Pitch Shot--Play the ball off the middle of your
stance with your hands slightly ahead of the ball. Your
weight should be mostly on your left side. Take the
clubhead back rather steeply and strike the shot with a
descending stroke, keeping your head still.

You must concentrate on keeping your weight balanced with
no head movement. Everyone has a tendency to look up
quickly to see where the ball is going. It's also helpful
to watch skilled players hit these shots; imitation is
beneficial so long as you imitate what is good.

You can practice short shots for longer periods of time
without getting tired because they don't take the same
energy as full shots. Every player who wants to hit these
shots correctly should practice extensively--using the
proper technique--until you have the skill to play both
shots effectively.

As far as which clubs to use on these two crucial shots,
there's room for personal preference. Using just a
pitching wedge or sand wedge for both pitch shots and chip
shots has merit. Most important, you become thoroughly
familiar with how these clubs will react on either shot.
Some players like to hit chip shots with a 6-iron or 7-iron
clear up to the pitching wedge. It's a matter of what you
have confidence in.

The problems begin when you transfer from the practice
green to the golf course during competition. Players know
they can hit the shots correctly because they've done it
while practicing, but they become anxious and uncomfortable
on the golf course. It becomes very frustrating when
golfers have poor chipping and pitching rounds after
they've worked hard on the practice green. That happens.
Like putting, good short shots require confidence. Don't
give up. The main thing is to keep your head anchored
throughout the shot. That's easier said than done, but it
can become a part of your game. And that's when you'll be
on the way to being a good short-game player.

Concentration on the course is crucial. Chipping and
pitching is pressure-filled, just like putting, with
everyone watching you. Picture the line and distance and
the mechanics you want to use and stroke the shot with no
head movement. You can train yourself to do it
consistently. Religious practice of these two shots will do
more for your game than you imagined possible.

Richard's Quick Tip

Cock Right Knee In To Create Proper Backswing Coil

When your swing is too loose, it causes most of your weight
to move to the outside of the right foot during the
backswing, creating too much shoulder action coming
forward. To tighten this action and create a torque or
coil on the backswing, take your address position with your
right knee cocked in-toward the target. This teaches you
to swing back against a braced right side, retaining the
right knee cock. By setting up this pressure at the top of
the swing, your legs will react voluntarily on the forward
swing and you'll reduce that excessive shoulder motion.

A Bit Of Golf Trivia:
Are the lady pros as good with the short game as the
men pros? In 1961 and 1962, 54-hole tournaments were
held on a par 3 course where some of the top lady and
men pros competed from the same tees. Were these
tournaments won by a man or a woman? (answer is

thanks your email and tips. i have a question for Joe,
i hope he will be able to solve my swing's problem. i
have a big problem with distance. i have been thru
many pros in many countries. i have handicap 14.00.
They evaluate my swing and found out that the problem
is in the release. my right wrist will not stay hinge
till after impact .At impact or sometime before impact
my right wrist will be flat and move to the left and
the result put pressure on my left wrist and bend the
left wrist instead supinated. So at this time my
follow through will be short and left elbow move to
the sky! i can email you my swing in case you need.
thanks in advance for any tips to help me in this
regards.
best rgds
Bahman

Hello Bahman,
Go ahead and email your swing if you want to. I assume
you are right handed. The left elbow pointing to the
sky during the follow thru is a very bad thing, and
probably contributes to the other things you describe.
Do this drill to overcome it. Hold the club straight
out in front of you. Take a backswing and make sure
your right elbow folds down toward the ground. From
there take a slow follow thru and make your left elbow
point toward the ground. You may need to roll your
right forearm over the top of the left forearm to do
this. Repeat this at faster speeds, and when you get
the hang of it, then instead of holding the club
straight out in front of you, lower the clubhead to
the ground and repeat this drill along your regular
swing path, making sure the left elbow points down
during the follow thru. Good luck.
Joe

Joe,
Every now and then I read some instructions that
mention pronating and supinating the wrists. I have no
idea what the heck that means. Please explain.
Rod

Hello Rod,
The dictionary says prone means a face down position,
and supine means face up. Hold your arm out in front
of you with the palm facing the ground. If you then
bend your wrist down, you are pronating, if you bend
your wrist up, you are supinating. For the golf swing,
as you address the ball, your wrists are naturally
somewhat supinated. As you take your backswing, some
pronation takes place to get the shaft on the proper
swing plane. Some golfers pronate more than others.
Raymond Floyd has the most and Kenny Perry has the
least. Somewhere in between is the right amount for
you, so you might as well experiment on the range
until you find how much pronation works best for you.
On the downswing, you may notice more pronation for
those who draw the ball and more supination for those
who fade the ball.
Joe

Question for the Evil Twin:
Jody, since you are such a philosopher, what do you
think about human ignorance and apathy?
Answer: I don't know and I don't care.

Answer to the above trivia question:
Louise Suggs won in 1961, and Sam Snead won in 1962.

Richard's Quick Tip

I would like to thank my good friend Bill Lloyd for writing this
Article for us.

In the Spring, one starts to get more prepared for on the
course activities. At this time of year and in fact, though
the whole year, the short game is where the strokes are
saved, more than just keeping the ball in play.
If you have ever bowled or pitched a softball, keep that
underhand throw in mind as you practice chipping, pitching
and putting. .Go to the practice green with 6-12 balls,
stand just off the green a foot or more and toss balls to
the pin, UHDERHAND. Note the length of carry and the roll
and break each time and you should probably get zoned in
after no more than 6 tosses. After you can put 50% or more
of your tosses within 3 feet of the cup (or in the hole),
move to three more areas around the green and repeat. Go
from each of the four major compass points, N-S-E-W, but
not necessarily in that order.

Then take a pitching wedge and repeat the process. I use
the PW, as it's not too lofted and not too flat. Over time,
move further away from the green and repeat as before. Go
up to at least 10 yards from the hole.with hand tosses.
When you get to 10 yards or more, it's time to use the club
all of the time, but stay with the PW until you've come
close to mastering the shot from as far away as 50-60
yards. Remember that on every shot, no matter how short or
long, to accelerate through the ball. IE- keep your back
swing and follow through equal, or shorter on the back and
longer on the follow through. Don't go way back and quit at
the ball as so many people do. It's always better to go
short and long, rather than the reverse.

Much of the distance control has to do with the speed of
your swing. I have a rather slow back swing as I count 1 &
2, through the ball. VJ Singh counts 1-2, but that could
cause a swing too fast. Adding the & in the middle tends to
keep your swing more repeatable, and keeps you from rushing
the back swing.

I'd be lost without the clock, as I mechanically use it for
most short shots. EG- If I have a chip about 10-15 yards, I
go back to about 7 o'clock and follow through to 5 o'clock
or more. For 20-25 yards, I go from 8 to 4, from 30-35
yards it's 9 to 3, etc. It is deadly to cock your wrists at
take away or anytime before your hands rise to 9 o'clock
and they don't break again until 3 o'clock on the follow
through. The only time you should break your wrists at the
ball are in some bunker shots when you have to loft the
ball quickly, or if you are going to flop a short shot to
the green, but if your handicap is over 10, stick to the
natural wrist break at 9 & 3 and forget the flop shots.
It's always best to get the ball to roll more than to try
to pitch to the pin and hope you can stop it on a dime.
When chipping around the green, think putting grip ad
stroke.

Remember to come close to mastering the PW before trying to
chip with more or less lofted clubs and when you/'re ready
for a change, don't forget that you can use a hybrid or
fairway metal in thicker grass just off the green, and putt
the ball, but before you try them, practice! Another key
shot around the green? What do you do when the ball rests
against the fringe? It's hard to putt or chip, as the grass
will get to the club face before the ball, so, you can
take a sand wedge, pitching wedge or whatever club you feel
most comfortable with and "skull" the ball using the sole
of the club and strike the ball in its midsection.
Next time, what do you do to start your back swing? Many
use a forward press, but I'll tell you of some other more
safe ways to start. I find too many problems with the
forward press, the biggest problem being that it tends to
make your wrists break on the take away. Not good!
Good golfing to all!
Bill Lloyd

Golf Potpourri

by

Mac Stevenson

Practice Shots Within Your Skill Level

The 2008 golfing season is underway in many parts of the
nation and getting close in the colder regions. Players
who want to improve their games for the upcoming summer
will try and imitate shots that they see professionals hit
on TV. And they also try and duplicate the methods that
they see more-talented players using.

Imitation is okay, but most golfers will be better off with
solid instruction from sources like Richard's videos; they
are aimed directly at average golfers who want to improve.

Trying to emulate the fundamentals and shot selection of
talented players is fine so long as you don't attempt shots
that are beyond your skill level.

After watching talented professionals hit flop shots during
a PGA tournament on TV, many amateur players can't wait to
get to their course and try that shot. Don't do it.

Professional golfers are playing a different game than we
are when it comes to highly sophisticated and tricky shots.
These are the best players in the world and most of them
haven't done anything but play golf since they were ten
years old. So don't get the idea that you can go out on
the course and hit the same kind of shots that they do. It
won't work.

One of the new clubs that has gained favor with the pros is
the lob wedge. It's a tricky club. Most amateurs will be
better off if they stick to a pitching wedge and sand wedge
and become thoroughly capable with both. Low-handicap
players might benefit from learning to play with a lob
wedge on certain courses, but most amateurs will benefit by
sticking to their sand wedge for basic short shots.

The aforementioned flop shot is not for the average golfer.
It's not a shot that very many of the pros use, so why
should you rush out to the course--without practicing the
shot--and try to hit it. You're liable to skull it and
injure one of your playing companions. Learn how to hit
the conventional pitch shot with your sand wedge and you'll
be money ahead.

Another shot used frequently by the pros is a chip shot
that's hit by blading a sand wedge on purpose from the
fringe. This shot takes perfect hand-eye coordination and
hours of practice before it can be mastered. Amateurs will
do themselves a favor if they stick to the standard chip
shot from the fringe.

Another Johnny-come-lately in the repertoire of the pros is
the unorthodox method of using a fairway wood to hit chip
shots. Many amateurs are now attempting this shot during
their weekly outings, and most of them try it without
practicing the shot. They'll end up wasting shots around
the green. Once again, stick to the basic short shots that
you've practiced and used over time.

The pros often hit their drivers from the fairway. Unless
you're a highly skilled amateur, don't do it. More often
than not, you'll miss the shot and cost yourself a stroke.

Professionals often hook or fade their shots around trees
when they're in trouble. Most amateur golfers will be
better off pitching safely back to the fairway. Hitting a
controlled hook or fade is one of the toughest shots in
golf and more often than not you'll just end up in more
trouble if you try it. And don't believe the old adage
that trees are 90 percent air; they're more like 90 percent
tree.

No matter what else you copy, do not imitate the pros pace
of play; they're playing for their living and it's a
different world from how we play. Keep yourself moving at
a brisk pace. Playing slow like the pros won't help you at
all.

If, after all these warnings, you're still determined to
try tricky shots you see the pros use while watching PGA
tournaments on TV--practice them first. You'll quickly
find out you need a very good lie to hit a flop shot. And
you'll need a lot of practice to blade a chip shot with
your sand wedge. Don't try tricky shots for the first time
during a round of golf. If you do attempt some of these
shots, you'll regret it when it's time to settle the bets
on the 19th hole.

Almost all amateur golfers will be better off sticking with
shots they've used over the years. Leave the fancy stuff
to the highly talented guys who earn their living playing
golf.

Richard's Quick Tip

Right-hip to Left-knee "rope" Teaches Aggressive Swing

Golfers who can't get a good weight shift to the right on
the backswing and to the left on the forward swing can
benefit greatly from trying this image: Think of a rope
connecting your right hip to your left knee. If you turn
correctly on the backswing, the rope will pull your left
knee away from the target, your weight will shift to the
right and you will be in good position to use the lower
body more aggressively on the downswing.

I've found this particularly useful among golfers whose
left knees tend to flex toward the target line with their
hips turning very little going back.

A Bit Of Golf Trivia:
It was much harder to make an ace in the old days, and
it had nothing to do with a golfer's skills. Why was
that true? (answer is below)

Joe,
I am a blind golfer and have been playing since 1950.
I lost my sight but still love the game of golf. Ten
years go I had both knees replaced and now I don't
have much action with my bottom side especially my
right leg and without it I have lost a lot of
distance. Yes I was a good golfer and still am a good
golfer at 90 years of age. I am the recipient of the
Ben Hogan award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame
in St. Augustine Florida. My question for you is
there any drill that I can use to me with only my
upper body. Will appreciate an answer.
Joe Lazaro

Hello Joe,
It is an honor to be contacted by a Hall Of Fame
member like you. I admire your determination to
overcome your physical problems and still seek
improvement at your age. With your limited lower body
motion, a loss of distance is a natural thing.
Sometimes if you fight it too much you may start
hitting more poor shots. It might be better to take it
easy and make good contact more consistently and live
with the loss of distance. However, if you are pain
free when your body turns, I would recommend the
double clubber drill as described in the Body Golf
videos. I hope this helps. God bless you.
Joe

Joe,
I was reading recently that a blind golfer got a hole
in one. I find that hard to believe. How is that
possible?
Jake

Hi Jake,
For those of us blessed with the gift of sight, it is
hard to imagine doing anything blind, or deaf, or
without one of your limbs. However, anyone who is in
love with life has made up their mind that they are
going to enjoy life any way that they can. Imagine
yourself suffering an accident and losing your sight.
You would have a choice of sitting around feeling
sorry for yourself, or instead finding friends who are
willing to help you maintain your love for golf by
taking you to a practice green and lining you up for a
putt. Imagine feeling the thrill of tapping the putt
and hearing it fall into the hole. Those of us who
have good sight should try closing our eyes and
feeling this, not only is it pretty cool, but it also
helps you concentrate on trusting a proper stroke
without looking up too soon. It is said that whenever
a person loses one of their senses, all the other
senses compensate by becoming more keen. Then imagine
you (as a blind person) are taken to a practice range
where you can execute a swing without visual
distractions, and feel the thrill of hitting the ball
right on the sweet spot. Your friends give you
feedback on the results of your shots. Then you can go
onto a course and your friends can guide you the same
way. If you can contact the ball cleanly every time,
and your friends can make all your distance and
alignment decisions for you, then it is possible that
you could get no worse than a bogey on each hole, and
therefore shooting in the 80's is within the realm of
possibility.
Joe

Question for the Evil Twin:
Jody, what do you think about drivers that have the
adjustable weight screws?
Answer: It's a screwy idea, but it might be fun to
screw around with, as long as you don't screw up your
swing trying to screw the right weights into the right
screw holes. It gives a whole new meaning when you hit
a bad shot. Instead of saying screw it, you can
actually do it.
(note from Joe - Jody, I think you have a screw loose,
and it's not in your driver)

Answer to the above trivia question:
In the old days, many flagsticks were made of wood and
those were thicker, so there was less room for the
ball to fall in. I am sure there were many shots in
the old days that would have been aces if they had the
advantage of modern skinnier flagsticks. Ben Hogan
reportedly had several shots hit the flagstick and
bounce off the green, so he stopped aiming directly at
the flag because of that.

Coil Upper Body Over Right Leg To Cut Down Tension

Tense golfers cannot swing the club freely, and thus are
destined to never reach their playing potential. To reduce
your tension level, I suggest you take a lighter grip and
let your arms hang freely at address. Then start your
backswing with a turn of the shoulders so that your body
gradually coils over your right leg. This action properly
moves the weight to the right on the backswing and then
makes it more natural to move it left on the forward swing.

If too much tension is one of your tendencies, this can go
a long way toward reducing it. I knew a lady to practice
this and she quickly learned to swing with less tension and
added about 20 yards to her drive.

We see golfers on the course and even on the driving range
all tensed up on a very regular basis, and this is just one
little technique that may help them.

"Keep Polishing Your Wheel"

If you are new to my newsletter, welcome aboard.

My mission is to help you lower your score by increasi ng your awareness of how your mind processes information and providing you with insights on how to improve your mental game.

It is important for my new subscribers to get up to speed as quickly as possible. If you truly desire to lower your score, read my book and listen to my CD (part one) before and (part two) after you play as well as read my mental tip newsletters.

Hi Mike,

"I know that I am doing well with "Polishing the Wheel". The scores have come down almost instantly from high 80s to low 80s.

"I do not get angry or "down" on the course anymore. I am always purposely smiling on the course and working to enjoy it and stay in the moment. I am concentrating on making the daily affirmation an integral part of my life. In golf, I am doing the 4 step routine pretty consistently (>75%) and I will do it more and more; however, the awareness of the process that you have taught me really brought somethings home.

"Michael, I am almost 62 years old, a highly educated man (Ph.D.) with a lot of experience, but your lessons have been incredibly profound and pervasive to my being.

"I am starting to "GET IT" and I just want to thank you again and again for your wisdom and your ability to share it. You are simply a BRILLANT teacher and I will be eternally grateful for you and the day I started learning from you."

With Great Admiration and Appreciation,
Mike Jayjock

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

&quo t;Half Full or Half Empty?"

The whole goal of the mental game is to create a mental state that optimizes your brain's chemistry, which in turn increases your ability to perform. If you have fear or doubt that you can make a golf shot, you lower your chemistry and decrease your chance of making a successful shot.

You can transform your negative emotions into positive ones by creating a mind-set that your glass is always half full. You don't want to play with a glass that is half empty. The liquid is in the middle of the glass, but there can be two different emotions to the same fact. One is positive; the other negative. It is up to you to decide if your glass is half full or half empty.

If you believe that your glass is half full, you will have a higher level of chemistry than if you believe that your glass is half empty. As simple as this concept sounds, it can make the difference betwee n making the shot or missing the shot because it makes the difference between whether your chemistry is high or low.

The way you create the mind-set that your glass is always half full is to look at how your probability of success influences your emotions on every golf shot you face. If you have an easy shot and you're confident that you can make it, your glass is half full. However, if it’s a very difficult shot, many golfers feel that their glass is half empty and worry about missing the shot.

A way around this up-and-down swing of emotions is to select only positive emotions when looking at your probability of making the shot. Even if it’s only 1 in 100 that you can pull the shot off, you have a choice of focusing on the 99% of not making the shot or the 1% of making the shot if everything goes right and expect everything to go right. Your only other choice is to look for a safer shot if one is available.

If you decide to go for it, you can raise your chemistry by focusing totally on the 1% probability of making the shot and expecting to make it if everything goes right. That’s the key. You have to focus totally on expecting to make the shot if everything goes right and not even think about the 99% probability of not making it.

No one is a fortune teller and you don't know what will happen. However, if you train your tape that your glass is always half full and expect to make the shot if everything goes right, you will elevate your chemistry to a very high level. As a result you will make a lot more shots playing with a glass that is half full, instead of half empty.

The nice thing about it is that it's your choice and it will reflect in your score.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------

Super Bonus... When you order my book and CD, you will receive my new book Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips, which contains 75 of my previous mental tips. If you read a tip a day, you will be amazed at how much it will help you to keep polishing your wheel and shoot lower scores.

super bonus
