MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Fear Can Not Exist In The Present"

I have been interviewed on radio talk shows around the country. Many of the hosts who have read my book "The Mental Keys" commented about my statement that fear can not exist in the present. They had never looked at fear in that light. But, they all acknowledged that the concept makes total sense.

I have consulted with athletes in many different sports from Olympic Gold Medalists to low and high handicap golfers. All of them admitted that fear was public enemy number one on their list of negative emotions. Since an athlete, golfers especially, can not deny the reality of the mind/body connection, it is easy for them to realize that fear causes their performance to diminish. They, also, readily acknowledge that when thay are performing at their best they are not thinking. They are playing on instinct.

When an athlete experiences fear, he/she is thinking about a future outcome that has not occurred. Fear about an outcome triggers adverse chemical changes in your brain, which cause your performance to deteriorate. Because of the mind/body connection fear makes it impossible to duplicate the same stroke mechanics that you have when you are relaxed.

If you think about it, fear can not exist in the present. Since you can only physically exist in the present, you only have control of the present. In the present all one can do is execute at their curent level of proficiency. How well you control the present, determines the future outcome -- good or bad. It is only when you think about a future outcome that fear enters the equation and throws off your performance.

The vast majority of individuals have spent their entire life chasing the outcome. However, you can train your mind to ignore the outcome and stay in the present by focusing on mastering the process. This is a major cultural change for anyone brought up in the Western civilization's belief system of materialism and winning. Ignoring the outcome is a huge undertaking, but it can be accomplished.

In contrast, the philosophy of Zen is based solely on being the process -- be the ball. In the Eastern culture, centuries ago, samurai warriors were highly skilled in the martial arts. To be at their best, they were trained to fight without the fear of dying. Golf is a game! Golf is not a life or death situation. So have fun and relax.

Learn to have fun on the golf course and train your mind to stay in the present. If you do, you will have less fear and your scores will fall.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

"Dear Michael,

"It was last year around August that you entered my life when I received the Mental Keys that I had ordered.

"At that time my game was in shambles!! I had a perfect back swing, but could not reproduce the same when I stood over the ball. I was a different person when I faced that ball. I remember reading your book and I even exchanged mails with video clips of my golf swing. Thanks to your mental keys and few pointers from your friend Karl Fischer (the Director of 555 Golf Academy), I was able to turn my game around.

"Looking back, I had a 24 handicap back then and within 8 months, I have moved to being a 18 handicap. The good thing is that I know the handicap is moving south, and shall get lower as the months go on.

"The things that worked for me were definitely the words: "DESIRE" - "HARD WORK" - "FORGET ABOUT THE OUTCOME". I had a real deep rooted desire to improve and this was mixed with a lot of hard work. A disciplined schedule of having a coach and practicing on my own has helped the game improve.

"The part about "forget about the outcome" plays a very important role during this phase and continues with me when I play a round. Therefore, the PROCESS has been put in place. I have noticed, that I am much more relaxed and not bothered about what happens.

"I am also aware that when I get all excited about playing well and then start counting the strokes, there after the game crumbles and I come out not playing that well after all. Again, this brings back the reference to the OUTCOME.

"Overall I am very pleased with what this has done for me, and I use your principles to what ever else I do in life, which also includes improving my health. I have lost over 20 lbs in the same time using the words "Desire and Hard Work".

"Thanks so much and God Bless!"

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"How to Regroup -- Quickly"

What do you do when you start out slow or fast and your game falls apart? How do you regroup quickly while you are playing a round of golf before it's too late and you end up with a higher score than you are capable of shooting?

If you don't have a plan for regrouping quickly, here are three questions that will help you get back on track fast. First, ask yourself "What time is it?" The answer is always NOW.

If you are upset about previous bad shots, you are living in the past. If you have fear about repeating past bad shots, you are living in the future. By asking yourself "What time is it?" you are reminding yourself that you can only play in the present, which is NOW. How well you perform in the present determines how well you execute your next shot. So stop agonizing about the past and worrying about the future and realize that NOW is the only time that exists.

Once you are in the present, ask yourself "Is my glass half full or half empty?" Every shot has a probability of success of making the shot and a probability of failure of not making the shot. If you are thinking about the probability of missing your next shot, you are playing with a glass that is half empty. At this point, start focusing totally on the probability of making your next shot so you can play with a glass that is half full. See my previous tip "Half full or half empty."

The final question to ask yourself is "Do I believe?" This question has two parts. One, do you believe that you can make the next shot if everything goes right? Two, do you believe that everything can go right? No one is a fortune teller and you don't know what will happen, but if you BELIEVE that you can make the shot if everything goes right and BELIEVE that everything can go right, you raise your chemistry and increase the probability of making your next shot.

If you don't BELIEVE, you are back at question one where you are not in the present or at question two where your glass is half empty.

If this is the case, make sure you have a talk with yourself and ask yourself these three questions:

What time is it?

Is my glass half full?

Do I believe?

If your answers are NOW, YES and YES, you will regroup very quickly. If not, Old Man Golf is going to have a field day and kick your butt.

Since it takes time to reprogram your tape, start asking yourself these questions NOW before your next round of golf when the battle begins on the six inch golf course between your ears. If you do, you will regroup quickly. It's your choice.
