Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tip NL - Issue 237

Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tip Newsletter

Issue 237: Tuesday - April 29, 2008

Hi Determined Golfer,

If you find this newsletter helpful, please tell your friends, associates and golf instructor. Thanks for helping out.

"Keep Polishing Your Wheel"

If you are new to my newsletter, welcome aboard.

My mission is to help you lower your score by increasing your awareness of how your mind processes information and providing you with insights on how to improve your mental game.

It is important for my new subscribers to get up to speed as quickly as possible. If you truly desire to lower your score, read my book and listen to my CD (part one) before and (part two) after you play as well as read my mental tip newsletters.

Once you have done your homework, you will have laid the foundation to have one of the best mental games around. The next step is to continue to work on improving your mental game (polish your wheel) until these insights become an instinctive part of your mental makeup.

My advice to my old subscribers is to keep polishing your wheel if you want your scores to continue to fall. Since my mental tips are designed to enhance and reinforce your understanding of "The Mental Keys," keep reading them as well as rereading my book from time to time.

Some of my newsletters contain new tips and others repeat past tips to refresh your tape. If you keep polishing your wheel, your scores will continue to fall. I guarantee it!

Once in awhile, I send out a Golf Announcement to inform you of other golf products that will help you to polish your wheel. Please take a serious look at them.

Play well and keep polishing your wheel,

Michael Anthony

P.S. Once you read this section "Keep Polishing Your Wheel" several times, you can skip it in future newsletters and go directly to the "Golfers Locker Room Bulletin Board" for inspiring success stories or updates from me. After several repetitions, just seeing the words "Keep Polishing Your Wheel" will automatically remind you to keep working on improving your mental game.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

I am pleased to announce that you can listen to my mental golf tips weekly at GolfSmarterTips Podcast.

Mike,

"Just a note to thank you for your good work. It is definitely helping my game. I have shaved 2 strokes off my index going from a 6 to a 4.1 in the last several months.

" I have been working more on my mental game in the evenings as work commitments do not allow me more time to spend practicing. I have seen results in tournament play as well, finishing 4th in our club individual net match play championship and 1st in the team net match play championship (the first time I had played in any club events).

" I shared thoughts from the mental keys with my partner throughout the rounds. Afterwards he commented on how my postive comments helped him during the tournament, particularly dropping the negative thoughts of past misses and focusing on the next shot at hand.

"In the final match, after missing a 3 foot putt to lose the 16th hole and even the match, I encouraged him to forget about it and be confident that he would make the next one. Thankfully, he did and then drained a difficult 20 footer on the 18th for birdie and our team victory!

"Thanks again for the all the help. I will continue to work on my mental game and I will reorder your program when I wear out my current CD!"

-Patrick

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It makes my day when you email me your success stories or ask for my help after you have read my book and listened to my CD.

Don't be shy. It is always good to share positive feedback with your fellow golfers. Your generosity in sharing your experiences with others will help inspire them to keep polishing their wheel and help you sink an extra putt or two :-)

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

Training, Training, Training

After a friendly game with a stranger, he bought me a drink and told me that I had intimidated him. Then he said firmly, "I don't get intimidated."

I asked him why he got intimidated. He replied that my level of confidence never changed whether I made or missed a shot and I always played as if I would make the shot. Then I asked him what he did. He told me that he coached wrestling and was the lead man for a swat team.

Being curious, I asked him what exactly does the lead man for a swat team do. He told me that he was the first person through the door and his job was to take out whoever was on the right side of the hallway or room before he was shot or killed.

I told him that I was a mental trainer and asked him how he mentally prepares himself to do his job. He told me that it's the same for wrestling or being the first one through the door. Training, training, training was his answer.

He trains himself to focus totally on executing the process without any fear or concern about the outcome. I asked him if he had any fear. He said his only fear was that the second man through the door behind him wouldn't take out whoever was on the left side of the hallway or room.

Then he told me that he relies on his partner's training to keep him out of harms way. Can you rely on your mental training to keep you out of harms way on the golf course or do you still get emotionally involved and think about the outcome?

Scientific research has revealed that human beings learn and remember what they have learned through repetition. Isn't it amazing then, that so many golfers expect to read a piece of information one time and retain it forever?

You may think my newsletters are somewhat repetitious, but that's OK. They are designed to be repetitious to help you to keep polishing the wheel until you have the best mental game around. Once you have a great mental game, it's important to keep training, training, training to keep it that way.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Bonus... When you order my book and CD, you will receive my new book Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips, which contains 75 of my favorite mental tips. If you read a tip a day, you will be amazed at how much it will help you to keep polishing your wheel and shoot lower scores.

super bonus

If you are not working on improving your mental game, you are playing golf with only half of the equipment. If you have not read The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf, your mental game will benefit greatly by seeing the whole picture instead of just pieces contained in these mental tips. My book gives you the tools to improve your mental game. My CD Polish the Wheel makes it much easier to keep using them.

"To develop a great mental game, it's critical to realize that your mental state affects the chemistry of your brain which in turn affects your ability to perform. Then, it's just a matter of reprogramming your mind to optimize your chemistry so you can play in the zone."

Fear of Sand Shots is Self-Induced

Numerous amateur golfers feel helpless when they hit one into a sand trap. This is baseless fear. With a minimum of practice--using the proper fundamentals--every golfer can become proficient enough with sand shots to consistently get out of the trap and on the green. And, with a little hard work, you'll find it's customary to expect to get up and down in two.

Many otherwise competent golfers become stiff with panic the moment they step into a sand trap. The reason for the feeling of dread--which is akin to terror--is that they have not taken the time or effort to master the fundamentals of the sand shot.

You must become familiar with, and understand the basic fundamentals, of the sand shot. You can learn the essentials of the sand shot from golf books, magazines, or Joe's video--"Short Game Clinic."

Sand shots--so far as escaping from the trap and getting on the green--are not difficult. The hard part of these shots is mental, not physical. You can't always get up and down in two, but you won't hack and chop until you've ruined your round.

Four varieties of stances and lies cover most of the sand shots you'll face:

* When you have a fairly level stance and a good lie
* An awkward stance caused by a lie on the upslope
* When you have a downhill lie and stance
* The dreaded, and most feared, buried lie

Don't despair. You'll have a level stance and reasonably good lie on the majority of your sand shots. The basic fundamentals on the level lie include an open stance with your hands slightly behind the ball; an open clubface; play the ball off your left heel; and pick out a spot just behind the ball where your clubface will enter the sand.

On the standard sand shot, your swing should be upright and outside-in so it's easier to slice your clubhead under the ball and through the sand.

The most important thing about a sand shot is to have a clear image in your mind of what the clubhead will do.

Your clubface doesn't touch the ball; it slices through the sand under the ball and literally throws the ball on the green.

Most fundamental instructions are weak in one area: They don't describe how much you should open the clubface. Simply put, the clubface should be very open on short sand shots and just slightly open for long explosions. You will have to experiment for the in-between distances to find what is right for you.

And you have to get in a sand trap and hit all four of the shots described above. Reading a book or watching Joe's videos will help, but you have to get in a sand trap and practice those fundamentals.

Experiment with various clubface alignments according to different distances until you're confident with this basic, but important, concept.

Don't let a buried lie strike terror into your psyche. This isn't a hard shot. Hood your clubface closed and hit behind the ball and down and through the sand, throwing sand and ball onto the green. Swing hard and follow through.

On most sand trap shots you'll use your sand wedge. However, on long trap shots (over 20 yards), try using your pitching wedge, nine iron, or even an eight iron. And open the clubface ever so slightly; you'll find the ball flies much further with less effort than the sand wedge requires.

If you don't have a sand trap on your driving range, you'll have to practice on the course. Take five or six balls and work on the four basic lies and stances. When you catch one of those days when you have to wait on every tee and there's no one behind you, take a few moments to practice sand shots while your buddies are wasting their time gabbing on the next tee.

Keep your head steady on all of these sand shots. You should actually see your clubhead enter the sand, and make sure you swing hard enough to slide your clubhead completely through the sand.

Another good idea is to write or type the fundamentals on a note card or two and have them laminated at a print shop. Keep them in your golf bag for handy reference while you practice.

Like so many things in life, sand-trap shots seem hard or next to impossible until you have the knowledge (fundamentals) and confidence (gained from practice) and know you can hit the shot correctly every time.

Spend some time on the beach and you'll gain a lot more than a good tan.

Joe's Quick Tip

Drain More Putts Inside of 10-Feet

The majority of golfers miss a lot of their putts
from under 10-feet away when they could easily make
them.

Consider that the diameter of the hole is 4.25 inches
and the ball is 1.68 inches. And when you involved
physics, you only need half of the ball on either side
of the cup to tip the center of gravity INTO the hole.

That means you actually have 5.93 inches to work with
(sounds a lot more manageable, right?)

In practice, cut out a perfect square 2.57" in length
out of cardboard (a full ball's diameter less than the cup).

If you hit the cardboard on any side (front, back, side to side)
it means you'll drain your putt.

Cut Your Practice Time in Half With These Shots...

Golf Potpourri
by
Mac Stevenson

Determine Which Shots to Practice in Early Spring

Spring is in full bloom and enthusiasm is running
rampant in the minds of most golfers. We can't
wait to buy a large bucket of range balls and head
for the driving range to hit every club in our bag.

Many players rush to the range and beat balls until
they're exhausted; they do all this with no thought
about how or what to practice. This won't hurt your
game; in fact, all practice using proper fundamentals
is beneficial. But strategic planning will produce
far better results.

A majority of golfers don't take the time to seriously
analyze their games before embarking on a vigorous
spring practice schedule. It's quite simple to examine
your game in minute detail to determine which shots you
should practice at the beginning of the season.

The first thing to do is to sit down and chart a
typical, albeit hypothetical, round of golf. You'll
have to imagine being on a course that you play
frequently and are familiar with. And you have to be
honest with yourself; from memory, chart the shots and
strokes on each hole that you will hit during a typical
(for you) round of 18 holes.

It doesn't matter whether you usually shoot around 70 or
100 so long as the chart is accurate and realistic
concerning your golf game.

The following is a chart from my home course for an
imaginary round of golf when I shoot 80; you can do the
same thing with your game.

Chart symbols: (D=Driver) (3-W=3 wood) (4-W=4 wood)
(5-W=5 wood) (P=pitch shot) (C=chip shot) (Pt=putt)
(9-I=9 iron) and so on with the irons.

#1 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (2 Pts)=5

#2 Par 3--(7-I) (2 Pts)=3

#3 Par 5--(D) (3-W) (3-W) (9-I) (3 Pts)=7

#4 Par 3--(4-I) (2 Pts)=3

#5 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (1 Pt)=4

#6 Par 4--(D) (5-W) (2 Pts)=4

#7 Par 5--(D) (3-W) (8-I) (2 Pts)=5

#8 Par 3--(5-W) (C) (2 Pts)=4

#9 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (2 Pts)=5

Front Nine Score=40

#10 Par 5--(D) (3-W) (7-I) (P) (1 Pt)=5

#11 Par 3--(4-I) (C) (2Pts)=4

#12 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (2 Pts)=5

#13 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (2 Pts)=5

#14 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (1 Pt)=4

#15 Par 3--(5-I) (2 Pts)=3

#16 Par 4--(D) (3-W) (P) (3 Pts)=6

#17 Par 3--(5-I) (1 Pt)=2

#18 Par 5--(D) (3-W) (7-I) (C) (2Pts)=6

Back Nine Score=40

Total=80

Now, to analyze your game for practice purposes, you
have to subtract your putts from the rest of your shots.
In the hypothetical round charted above, I used 34 putts
over the 18 holes. Subtracting the putts (34) from the
total score of 80, I see that I hit 46 shots other than
putts.

Don't surmise from this analysis that putting isn't
important; quite the contrary, the putter is the most
important club. But this study is to determine which
clubs to practice with on the driving range and the
putter doesn't factor in.

Keep in mind that I'm using my own game to illustrate
this charting method. Your game will be entirely
different, but you can use the same system.

Here's how the different shots (minus putts) added up
over my typical 18 hole round:

Drives Fairway Woods Full Irons Chips Pitches

12 14 9 3 8

=46

Right away--using the chart for my game--it becomes obvious
that I'm hitting more drives and fairway woods than other
shots. The drives and fairway woods accounted for 26 of
46 shots, which equates to 56.5 percent of the total shots.

That tells me immediately that the driver and fairway woods
need plenty of practice. Incidentally, fairway woods
include everything from the 3-wood to a 7-wood. And full
irons include your 3-iron through the sand wedge when you
take a full swing.

Chips and pitches are self-explanatory.

By using this charting method, you will discover that
certain clubs are more important than you thought they
were and vice versa.

And it's simple to use.

After you start playing regularly in the spring, you can
chart actual rounds and see how close they are to your
imaginary round.

You'll be amazed at how similar the two are.

Sometimes we can't see the forest through the trees; take
the time to examine your game closely before you begin your
spring practice sessions. It will be time well-spent.

"...So easy that your buddies will think that you sold your
soul to play better golf!"
- Mark Anthony Montaquila, creator of Total Golf

Despite thousands of eye-popping testimonials from
international customers all over the world, some high-priced,
snooty golf teachers can't stand the fact that Mark's teaching
style is making golfers out of "hackers" faster and cheaper than
ever in the history of the game!

The other day I got an angry email from a pro out in Virginia
telling me that I should get out of the golf instruction biz
because I'm "ruining" it and am "bad for the game."

He went on and on about how I should stop sending out emails,
tips, running a website, and selling DVDs.

Hmmm... I guess he must be the last known high-and-mighty
golf authority.

Or, could it be that...

I'm Making The Big Shot Pro Look Bad!

I suppose that I should show him the 2000-plus mind-boggling
testimonials from people all over the world thanking me for
producing simple, easy-to-follow, super-effective golf
training DVDs and tapes.

In all fairness, I'd be a little ticked off too...I mean,
here's this middle-class guy like Mark Anthony Montaquila,
comes out of nowhere, without...(gasp)...a golf pedigree, with
a training product better, less expensive and more effective
than what I'd been charging top dollar for to people who don't
know better.

Joe's Quick Tip

Exhale for 6 Seconds to Regain Composure

We've all hit that breaking point on the course...
the moment when you decide if you're going to break
your club in half after a series of bad shots.

When this happens, take a deep breath in and exhale
for at least 6 seconds.

It's like a lifejacket in a sea of negativity and it
will allow you to regain your composure and start
making shots like you trained yourself to.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

I am pleased to announce that you can listen to my mental golf tips weekly at GolfSmarterTips Podcast.

"I was a 12.5 handicap when I ordered your book and now I am a 6.7. My golf buddies asked me what I was doing. If I was practicing more or bought new clubs. I told them that I changed my mental attitude about the game and they all just kinda laughed and sipped their beer at the 19th hole.

"One of them thought for a minute and told me, 'You are right. You are a different golfer. You never get mad at yourself and cuss anymore. You shake your head a few times and then move on and hit the next shot. Usually it goes right at the pin.' He did not ask then, but he later asked me what book I had ordered.

"Afterwards I started analyzing what I was doing different and realized that it was your book that had changed my attitude about the game. Before I was always worried hole to hole about who was winning and whether or not I had won the last hole. If I lost the last hole and made a bad shot, it would drag me down for two or three holes.

"Now I make the bad shot and move on to the next one. I try to learn from the bad one as you indicate in your book, but I do not let it affect my attitude or my approach to the next shot.

"Until my friends pointed it out to me, I had not realized exactly how much of your boo k and email tips had sunk in and how much they were helping me in my approach to the game."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Playing in the Present"

One of the hardest things to communicate to a golfer is the importance of changing their world view from outcome thinking to process thinking because they have been conditioned by society from birth to judge their success from their outcome results. It takes a leap of faith to trust that perfecting the process -- which includes staying in the present and not thinking -- will produce the results you are str iving to achieve.

It's like trying to explain the Zen koan of "the sound of one hand clapping" used to train Zen Buddhist monks to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and force them into gaining sudden intuititive enlightenment.

Would you like to increase your concentration and keep from losing your focus during a round of golf? Would you like to play without fear or being nervous? Would you like to eliminate mental mistakes and mental collapses when you have the lead? Of course you would. By training your mind to play in the present, you greatly increase your ability to do so.

Playing in the present is exactly what it is: the present. You are in the present when you are without any thoughts or concerns about the past or future. Nothing else exists except the present and the truth of your circumstances. Your past brought you into the present and how well you do in the present will create your future. Any thoughts about the past or future take you out of the present and affect your ability to perform to your full potential in the moment, which is all you have.

Explaining the present is the easy part. The hard part is to fully REALIZE that the present is the only thing that matters because it is the only thing that exists. Everything else is just a fairy tale that exists in your imagination or desires.

Golfers with a strong mental game realize that the present is all that they can control. They have learned to play in the present w ithout concern about the past or future outcomes. They realize the power of just being in the moment, with the full intention, and expectation to accomplish their desires, without attachment to the results. When they are at their best, they play on instinct and trust their subconscious -- or "It" -- to make it happen for them.

Learning to play in the present, on instinct, requires time and effort. That is why experience is such a priceless commodity. Because when all else fails, the truth emerges from one's experiences, if you are honest with yourself. By training your mind to play in the present, you can shorten the time required to experience the power of being free to play on instinct and in the zone. Unfortunately, many golfers never learn to stop dwelling on their past and future outcomes. How about you?

The trick (or mental key) to being in the present is to allow yourself to learn from the feedback each shot provides, without your ego being involved in the outcome. By being honest about your present mechanical, strategic, physical and mental limitations, you will increase your awareness of what you can do to improve your present abilities. Then, it becomes a question of how strong your desire is to make the necessary changes or adjustments to improve.

If you don't have the desire or time to do the work to improve, that's OK. Just make sure that you play in the present without thinking, or concern about the outcome, so you can get the most mileage from your present limitations. If you do, you will shoot lower scores.

FYI - Making the Daily Affirmation a major part of your life is one of the best ways to train yourself to be in the present.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Bonus... When you order my book and CD, you will receive my new book Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips, which contains 75 of my favorite mental tips. If you read a tip a day, you will be amazed at how much it will help you to keep polishing your wheel and shoot lower scores.

Then, it's just a matter of reprogramming your m ind to optimize your chemistry so you can play in the zone."

Richard's Quick Tip

Practice Your Short Putts With Tennis Balls

Most missed short putts are the result of anxiety or lack
of confidence rather than mechanics. At those times the
hole may appear small and remote. A simple yet effective
way to overcome this and create confidence in your stroke
is to practice putting with tennis balls. Take two tennis
balls and tow golf balls to the putting green and start
with the tennis balls. Stand one putter length away from
the hole and stroke the oversized balls toward the hole
until you sink five in a row. If you miss, start over.
After you've aced your fifth consecutive tennis ball, put
the tennis balls aside and putt with the golf balls. The
ball will seem like a marble and the hole a bucket. You'll
sink a lot more of those three and four footers.

Golf Potpourri

by

Mac Stevenson

Golfers' Most Fierce Antagonist--Howling Wind

Across the Central Plains and much of the nation, the
weather is struggling to warm up. For several days the sun
shines and temperatures warm and the golf clubs come out of
the closet. And then another cold front sails through,
bringing colder weather and howling winds.

What TV announcers call a treacherous and gusting wind
during PGA tournaments bears no resemblance to the roaring
gales that whip across much of the nation during spring and
early summer.

On TV, the flags wave gently in the breeze; on the Central
Plains, the flags stand straight out and the flag poles
weave drunkenly, bent by the force of the unrelenting wind.

When playing in the wind, most golfers think of two types
of shots: those with the wind at your back, and shots with
the wind in your face.

There are actually four standard wind shots; the two
above-mentioned examples and those played in a
crosswind--left to right and vice versa.

Crosswinds are tricky. Many golfers don't realize that a
crosswind will knock your ball down and cause a loss of
distance similar to a shot directly into the wind. The
effect isn't as extreme, but there's a definite loss of
distance in a crosswind.

Here's the important thing to remember about full shots in
a strong crosswind: Most golfers err by not allowing for
enough drift. If the wind is howling from right to left on
a 150-yard par three, you have to start your shot well to
the right of the green. That's easier said than done, but
you can train yourself to do it.

The low punch shot--usually struck with a five- to
seven-iron--is a great weapon in the wind. You play the
ball well back in your stance, move your hands forward, and
strike down on the ball with an abbreviated backswing and
follow through.

A punch shot is not difficult to master, but it does
require some practice. Contrary to the common concept, a
punch shot can be used with the wind at your back as well
as in your face. And it can be used in a crosswind.

The punch shot produces a low, driving shot that minimizes
the wind's effect.

Winds on the Central Plains in April, May, and June often
gust to 40 or 50 mph. That makes it hard to keep your
balance. Make sure you have your feet firmly planted and
try and keep your swing smooth.

On iron shots into the wind, be sure and use plenty of
club. If it's a shot you would hit with a seven-iron on a
still day, don't be afraid to go down to a four- or
five-iron.

A strong wind will affect your short game as well as the
full shots. It's hard to maintain balance on chips and
putts.

Three- and four-foot putts are particularly treacherous
because it's so hard to stroke the ball. Just remember
that everyone has the same problem; the wind isn't
challenging you alone.

The best way to handle those short putts is to hit them as
quickly as possible without destroying your rhythm and
concentration. You might have to give it a bit of a jab
stroke, but do it quick and you'll make some of 'em.

It does help to widen your stance in the wind, but putting
is such an individual skill that you'll have to work out
your own method for putting in a strong wind.

Playing in a howling wind will challenge your mental
toughness to its very limit. If things start going bad,
it's easy to become discouraged and blame the wind. You
must fight against this form of self-pity.

You'll become tired much quicker than normal. Playing in a
Kansas howler for four hours makes you feel like someone's
been beating on you with a rubber hose.

When fatigue becomes the master, your resolve crumbles and
mistakes become more frequent. That's why the number-one
rule to follow in the wind is: Use more club than you
think you need and swing smooth. Not easy, smooth.

Use common sense and recognize what you are capable of and
what is impossible when playing in a fierce wind. Raise
your scoring expectations before you tee off--that's just
being realistic and will fend off discouragement.

If you really want to learn how to play in the wind, visit
Kansas for a week or so in early spring. You'll get a
chance to play in a howling gale almost every day.

Richard's Quick Tip
Reverse Swing To Loosen Up On The First Tee

If you don't have time to hit balls before a round of golf,
you should perform some form of exer4cise on the first tee
to loosen up your muscles and reacquaint the with the
motion of the swing. I've found the easiest way to relax
tight muscles is to make a dozen practice swing from the
wrong side--if you are "right-handed swing left-handed, and
if you're left-handed swing right-handed. Then take a few
practice swings from the "correct" side and play away.
This exercise stretches the lead hand, arm and shoulder
muscles, and improves your chances for a free, unrestricted
turn on the early holes.

Hi Mike,

"I have read the book and find it very much in line with my thinking.

"I have had a few golfers ask me if I thought they could be helped with hypnosis. I would not go there!

"You have the best approach, but alas most struggling amateurs would rather spend $500.00 on one of the latest drivers. After all, golfers buy "magic".

Thanks again,

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"How to Regroup -- Quickly"

What do you do when you start o ut slow or fast and your game falls apart? How do you regroup quickly while you are playing a round of golf before it’s too late and you end up with a higher score than you are capable of shooting?

If you don’t have a plan for regrouping quickly, here are three questions that will help you get back on track fast. First, ask yourself “What time is it?” The answer is always NOW.

If you are upset about previous bad shots, you are living in the past. If you have fear about repeating past bad shots, you are living in the future. By asking yourself “What time is it?” you are reminding yourself that you can only play in the present, which is NOW. How well you perform in the present determines how well you execute your next shot. So stop agonizing about the past and worrying about t he future and realize that NOW is the only time that exists.

Once you are in the present, ask yourself “Is my glass half full or half empty?” Every shot has a probability of success of making the shot and a probability of failure of not making the shot. If you are thinking about the probability of missing your next shot, you are playing with a glass that is half empty. At this point, start focusing totally on the probability of making your next shot so you can play with a glass that is half full. See my previous tip “Half full or half empty.”

The final question to ask yourself is “Do I believe?” This question has two parts. One, do you believe that you can make the next shot if everything goes right? Two, do you believe that everything can go right? No one is a fortune teller and you don’t know what will happen, but if you BELIEVE that you can make the shot if everything goes right and BELIEVE that everything can go right, you raise your chemistry and increase the probability of making your next shot.

If you don’t BELIEVE, you are back at question one where you are not in the present or at question two where your glass is half empty.

If this is the case, make sure you have a talk with yourself and ask yourself these three questions:

What time is it?

Is my glass half full?

Do I believe?

If your answers are NOW, YES and YES, you will regroup very quickly. If not, Old Man Golf is going to have a field day and kick your butt.

Since it takes time to reprogram your tape, s tart asking yourself these questions NOW before your next round of golf when the battle begins on the six inch golf course between your ears. If you do, you will regroup quickly. It’s your choice.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Bonus... When you order my book and CD, you will receive my new book Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips, which contains 75 of my favorite mental tips. If you read a tip a day, you will be amazed at how much it will help you to keep polishing your wheel and shoot lower scores.

Walking The Golf Course for Everyones Health

Years ago riding in golf carts was the favored type of
transportation on the golf course, because it was thought
that it allowed more players on the course at the same
time. And carts do shorten the gap in between tee times.

Of coarse we now realize that walking a course is usually
faster than riding in a cart. By the time each player
rides to his ball and his partner's ball it usually takes
longer in a cart.

Walkers each walk directly to their own ball, thus saving
time. Plus it saves time because you are not sitting in
your cart, before taking your shot, talking with your
partner. Instead, you can walk to your ball and think
about your next shot or your next club selection, while
walking.

Walking also gives you a chance to enjoy nature more. It
gets us closer to the golf course. You will pay more
attention to the lie of the course, the different types of
grass, where the sprinkler heads are. You may even notice
the beauty of the fairways, trees, and just the natural
surroundings of nature.

Long ago carts were introduced when our fairways were not
of the quality we have now. They were hard and the grasses
used then were not of the quality that we now have.
Therefore it was okay to ride on the fairways, it was no
big deal.

But with advancement in research, grasses have been bred
and introduced to grow in areas that we use to not be able
to grow grass. Areas of hardpans and shade where you use
to could not grow grass; now have beautiful green grass
growing on these areas.

And with these new improved grasses, it is much better to
walk on them, than ride a cart on them.

Many courses now restrict carts on grasses when they are
wet or have frost on them.

Walking a golf course is good for the sake of the course
itself and helps preserve the wet and sensitive areas,
which makes better golfing conditions for all of us.

I'm not saying that carts should be banned or that anyone
that wants to ride should give it up. There are many good
reasons for using a golf cart.

But, I am saying, that the next time you step up to the
tee, you will be doing yourself, your game, and the golf
course a favor if you just walk the course.

Thanks for listening and good golfing.

Richard's Quick Tip

Extend Left Arm Like Punter's Leg For Longer Shots

Some people fail to achieve sufficient clubhead speed
because they "quit" at the ball, with the left arm
collapsing through and past the impact area. You can help
yourself get up to speed by thinking of the form of a
football punter. A punter must fully extend his leg to
kick the ball an appreciable distance, and that same thing
applies to the left arm in golf through impact. If you
practice with this thought in mind, you can increase your
clubhead speed and distance and gain a few more first
downs.
