"Thanks Michael,

"BTW I have read through the whole book and listened to the CD now. A nice side effect is that it is helping my game as well - the whole idea of being in the moment and not thinking, but seeing the ball being hit is helping me overcome my fear of hitting the ball (not been playing a lot recently as too busy working - sad!)."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Fear Can Not Exist In The Present"

I have been interviewed on radio talk shows around the country. Many of the hosts who have read my book "The Mental Keys" commented about my statement that fear can not exist in the present. They had never looked at fear in that light. But, they all acknowledged that the concept makes total sense.

I have consulted with athletes in many different sports from Olympic Gold Medalists to low and high handicap golfers. All of them admitted that fear was public enemy number one on their list of negative emotions. Since an athlete, golfers especially, can not deny the reality of the mind/body connection, it is easy for them to realize that fear causes their performance to diminish. They, also, readily acknowledge that when thay are performing at their best they are not thinking. They are playing on instinct.

When an athlete experiences fear, he/she is thinking about a future outcome that has not occurred. Fear about an outcome triggers adverse chemical changes in your brain, which cause your performance to deteriorate. Because of the mind/body connection fear makes it impossible to duplicate the same stroke mechanics that you have when you are relaxed.

If you think about it, fear can not exist in the present. Since you can only physically exist in the present, you only have control of the present. In the present all one can do is execute at their curent level of proficiency. How well you control the present, determines the future outcome -- good or bad. It is only when you think about a future outcome that fear enters the equation and throws off your performance.

The vast majority of individuals have spent their entire life chasing the outcome. However, you can train your mind to ignore the outcome and stay in the present by focusing on mastering the process. This is a major cultural change for anyone brought up in the Western civilization's belief system of materialism and winning. Ignoring the outcome is a huge undertaking, but it can be accomplished.

In contrast, the philosophy of Zen is based solely on being the process -- be the ball. In the Eastern culture, centuries ago, samurai warriors were highly skilled in the martial arts. To be at their best, they were trained to fight without the fear of dying. Golf is a game! Golf is not a life or death situation. So have fun and relax.

Learn to have fun on the golf course and train your mind to stay in the present. If you do, you will have less fear and your scores will fall.

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"How to Regroup -- Quickly"

What do you do when you start out slow or fast and your game falls apart? How do you regroup quickly while you are playing a round of golf before it’s too late and you end up with a higher score than you are capable of shooting?

If you don’t have a plan for regrouping quickly, here are three questions that will help you get back on track fast. First, ask yourself “What time is it?” The answer is always NOW.

If you are upset about previous bad shots, you are living in the past. If you have fear about repeating past bad shots, you are living in the future. By asking yourself “What time is it?” you are reminding yourself that you can only play in the present, which is NOW. How well you perform in the present determines how well you execute your next shot. So stop agonizing about the past and worrying about the future and realize that NOW is the only time that exists.

Once you are in the present, ask yourself “Is my glass half full or half empty?” Every shot has a probability of success of making the shot and a probability of failure of not making the shot. If you are thinking about the probability of missing your next shot, you are playing with a glass that is half empty. At this point, start focusing totally on the probability of making your next shot so you can play with a glass that is half full. See my previous tip “Half full or half empty.”

The final question to ask yourself is “Do I believe?” This question has two parts. One, do you believe that you can make the next shot if everything goes right? Two, do you believe that everything can go right? No one is a fortune teller and you don’t know what will happen, but if you BELIEVE that you can make the shot if everything goes right and BELIEVE that everything can go right, you raise your chemistry and increase the probability of making your next shot.

If you don’t BELIEVE, you are back at question one where you are not in the present or at question two where your glass is half empty.

If this is the case, make sure you have a talk with yourself and ask yourself these three questions:

What time is it?

Is my glass half full?

Do I believe?

If your answers are NOW, YES and YES, you will regroup very quickly. If not, Old Man Golf is going to have a field day and kick your butt.

Since it takes time to reprogram your tape, start asking yourself these questions NOW before your next round of golf when the battle begins on the six inch golf course between your ears. If you do, you will regroup quickly. It’s your choice.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

Hi Mike,

"I have been using the mental keys as described in the book and listing to the CD to and from the course each day before and after I play. It really is helping me keep my mind in the right space to play good golf.

"I represented my home course North Lakes in division 1 pennants, a match play formate for 0-9 handicap players no handicap used in the match. I won 4 & 3, and this is due to me using the 4 step routine and alway thinking my glass was half full even when I hit a bad shot and let a difficult up and down.

"Thanks for giving me the tools to improve my mental game, which is so important in match play."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"What If I Miss?"

This is a continuation of my last newsletter's tip "Half Full or Half Empty?"

If you believe that your glass is half full, you will have a higher level of chemistry than if you believe that your glass is half empty. As simple as this concept sounds, it can make the difference between making the shot or missing the shot because it makes the difference between whether your chemistry is high or low.

Assuming that your risk/reward ratio favors taking the shot at hand, you raise your chemistry by focusing totally on the probability of making the shot and expecting to make it if everything goes right. That's the key. You have to focus totally on expecting to make the shot, and not even think about the probability of not making it.

Let's assume your glass was half full when you hit the ball, but you missed your target. Does your glass remain half full or does it become half empty? If you're mentally tough and realize that missed shots are a part of golf, you will keep if half full. If Old Man golf has his way, he will have you convinced that your glass is half empty before the round of golf is over.

Many golfers normally blame their mechanics when they miss a shot. Then they start making swing adjustments while they are playing. If they are not careful, they will end up changing their entire game before the round is over. Then they have to go to the driving range to find their swing.

What happens in many cases, it’s not their mechanics that were off. It was their mental state that was off because they started thinking that their glass was half empty. This changed their chemistry and caused their mechanics to be off. That’s why golfers can quickly regain their swing on the driving range before they finish hitting a bucket of balls.

Once they become relaxed and their chemistry improves, it allows their normal swing to return. Unfortunately, they go away thinking that they found their swing, instead of realizing that they found a glass that was half full.

If you know what your probability of success is and make allowances for your missed shots, you will be able to keep your glass half full when you are playing. Otherwise, you will start blaming your mechanics and make it easy for Old Man golf to ruin your day.

So the answer to the question "What if I miss?" is make sure that your glass is half full before you start changing your mechanics while you are playing.

"Well, I did it. I won the Golf Channel Amateur City of Las Vegas Championship!

"My friend told me about the Golf Channel Am Tour a few weeks ago. I figured that the only way I can really test myself was during competitive rounds against opponents striving for the same thing as myself. I joined the Am Tour Championship/Scratch Division and my first event was at my home course of Las Vegas National where Vic teaches.

"I opened up shooting 4 over on the front 9 recording a double bogey on #6. Once again, I stepped aside and had a little talk with myself. I thought that I was in the right mental state throughout the round as I listened to you CD on the way to the course. However, after #6, I shot even par and then something happened...I entered the "Zone". I birdied 10, 12, 15 and 17! It was if (and it probably was) my subconscious took over. I shot 72 and won the Championship Division. For me, this is and was a great accomplishment towards my goals for the year.

"Mike, thanks for the continued words of support. I know that if I was not "polishing the wheel" of the mental game and studying the Mental Keys and not "polishing" the process with Vic, I would be right where I was a year ago.

"Thanks again for everything."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Half Full or Half Empty?"

The whole goal of the mental game is to create a mental state that optimizes your brain's chemistry, which in turn increases your ability to perform. If you have fear or doubt that you can make a golf shot, you lower your chemistry and decrease your chance of making a successful shot.

You can transform your negative emotions into positive ones by creating a mind-set that your glass is always half full. You don't want to play with a glass that is half empty. The liquid is in the middle of the glass, but there can be two different emotions to the same fact. One is positive; the other negative. It is up to you to decide if your glass is half full or half empty.

If you believe that your glass is half full, you will have a higher level of chemistry than if you believe that your glass is half empty. As simple as this concept sounds, it can make the difference between making the shot or missing the shot because it makes the difference between whether your chemistry is high or low.

The way you create the mind-set that your glass is always half full is to look at how your probability of success influences your emotions on every golf shot you face. If you have an easy shot and you're confident that you can make it, your glass is half full. However, if it’s a very difficult shot, many golfers feel that their glass is half empty and worry about missing the shot.

A way around this up-and-down swing of emotions is to select only positive emotions when looking at your probability of making the shot. Even if it’s only 1 in 100 that you can pull the shot off, you have a choice of focusing on the 99% of not making the shot or the 1% of making the shot if everything goes right and expect everything to go right. Your only other choice is to look for a safer shot if one is available.

If you decide to go for it, you can raise your chemistry by focusing totally on the 1% probability of making the shot and expecting to make it if everything goes right. That’s the key. You have to focus totally on expecting to make the shot if everything goes right and not even think about the 99% probability of not making it.

No one is a fortune teller and you don't know what will happen. However, if you train your tape that your glass is always half full and expect to make the shot if everything goes right, you will elevate your chemistry to a very high level. As a result you will make a lot more shots playing with a glass that is half full, instead of half empty.

The nice thing about it is that it's your choice and it will reflect in your score.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

Mike,

"The New Year is off to a decent start. I have been mentally and physically training my mind and body over the past 2 months for the upcoming 2010 season. Vic hosted a Classic Club tournament this past weekend at Las Vegas National in which I entered and posted a 79, 78. (We used persimmon woods and pre 1984 irons and putter) Overall, I was pretty pleased, but one moment stood out.

"On day 2 (Sunday) I was 6 over after 5 holes! (Cock-a-Doodle-Doo is right!) I stepped away from my group to refocus. I said to myself, "One shot at a time; Focus on the process"...

"I do not know if it was nerves or pressure, but I knew after those 6 holes I had a decision to make. And like I stated before, I went on and played one shot at a time using the four-step routine to focus on the process. In the last 12 holes, I had only one other bogey. (par 71) A year ago, I probably would of packed it in and finished with an 83 or 84.

"Once again, thanks for tips and I'll keep polishing the wheel."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"The Importance of the Mental Game"

To fully comprehend the importance of the mental game of golf, a golfer has to clearly understand what is the purpose of the mental game, and how does one achieve a great mental game?

Almost daily, more and more research studies are being released that reveal that much of human behavior, health, and performance are affected by the chemistry of the brain. If a golfer knows how to control the variables that make up their mental game, they can positively influence the chemistry of the brain, and increase their performance.

One of the keys to developing a great mental game is to clearly realize that your mental state affects the chemistry of your brain, which in turn affects your ability to perform. Then, it’s just a matter of reprogramming your mind to optimize your chemistry so you can play in the zone, or at your highest level of mechanical proficiency.

In this limited space I can only briefly touch on some of the mental keys that will help golfers to lower their score. Your thoughts, diet, exercise, rest, environment, and physiology affect the chemistry of your brain. While they are all important, the fastest way to lower your score is to change your thoughts from negative to positive.

The easiest way to do this is to understand that all of your thoughts have two components: facts and emotions. You may not like some of the facts that you experience during a round of golf, but it is important to realize that facts are merely facts – fair or unfair. It is even more important to become aware that it is the emotions you attach to these facts that affect your performance.

Positive emotions cause your brain to secrete beneficial chemicals that will improve your performance. Conversely, negative emotions cause your brain to secrete chemicals that adversely affect your performance. As simple as this concept sounds, it cannot be denied that you will always play better when you are positive, then when you are negative. Now you know why the mental game is so important.

All I have to do to help a golfer shoot lower scores at any level is show them how to reduce their negative emotions and increase their positive emotions. It is almost like magic and works every time if you use “The Mental Keys”.

The more you learn to master your emotions, the better you will play at any level. The more you master your mechanics, the lower you will score. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

In golf most negative emotions originate from concern of the outcome. The key to controlling your emotions is to realize that you cannot serve two masters and be effective. You can choose to be process oriented or remain concerned with the outcome.

The only purpose that the outcome has is to give you direction and feedback to make the necessary adjustments to improve your mechanical and mental games. If you train your mind to focus solely on the process of improving and do the work, it is only a matter of time until you achieve your desired outcome.

If you insist on serving two masters by being concerned with the outcome while you are trying to improve the process, you greatly diminish your chances for success.

The next time you play a round of golf, stop looking over your shoulder at your score. Instead, play one shot at a time totally in the present. If you do, I guarantee you will end up with a lower score.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

Michael

"I want to thank you for your work on the mental game. It certainly improved mine. I can't say it made my scores that much lower, but I made me far more consistent.

"I've had many rounds now without any doubles and that makes a huge difference in scoring, as anybody knows. Also, every time I stand up to a shot, I believe that I can make it. I don't make them all, but I'm making more - puts, approaches and even fairway woods. It's amazing how well you can put when you believe that the put, even a long one, could go in!

"When I'm going head to head, the pressure is just in the background and doesn't affect me as much. Take a breath, focus, make a swing and see what happens. Now that's living! Er, I mean golf!"

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Reduce the Variables of Golf"

Golf can be a very complex game because the mechanics of a golfer's swing is not a simple thing to learn and execute instinctively. However, the more you can reduce the variables of golf, the simpler the game becomes, and the easier it is to lower your score.

Unfortunately, many golfers trying to lower their score spend most of their time and energy on buying expensive equipment or practicing without taking lessons. Besides not taking lessons and practicing, the average golfer neglects to work on improving the simpler variables that they have more control over.

Fortunately, there are three other variables that influence a golfer’s performance and score. They are 1) course management or strategy, 2) physical condition, and 3) the mental game. These variables are much simpler to control than the mechanics of the golf swing.

Course management or strategy is simply playing the golf course within your mechanical and physical limitations. Whatever level of mechanical skill you have attained, learn what your probability of success is for each club in your bag and base your shot selection according to your skill level. Don't try to be a hero unless you have a legitimate chance of making the shot. Be realistic and play within your limitations.

Being in good physical condition is very simple to control, but requires strong discipline to follow a structured stretching and exercise program. A strong flexible body makes it a lot easier to repeat a complex golf swing, especially towards the end of a round of golf, when many out-of-condition golfers are getting physically tired. It's a simple choice. Either get - and stay - in shape, or pay the consequences by shooting higher scores.

The mental game is the simplest variable to control if you know how. It requires the total realization that your mental state affects the chemistry of your brain which in turn affects your ability to perform. Then, it's just a matter of reprogramming your mind to optimize your chemistry to play in the zone at your full potential.

Golf is a funny game in that it has its share of ups and downs, which vary from hole to hole and from day to day. The most important variables that you can control are your attitude and state of mind. If you control your attitude and always keep your cup half full, it's a lot easier to put up with the emotional roller coaster of golf. A positive attitude allows you to remain confident when the golf gods turn against you and gives your subconscious a chance to figure out what is happening mechanically.

If you reduce the variables, you will have more fun playing golf and shoot lower scores.

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"A NEW BEGINNING"

New Year's Day is special because it marks the beginning of a new year. Many individuals make New Year's resolutions to improve their lives. Unfortunately, many of these resolutions go by the wayside in only a couple of days or weeks. Are you keeping your New Year's resolutions, or didn't you even bother to make any since you haven't kept the ones you made in the past?

Whether you have or haven't, here is a powerful way to improve your life as well as your golf. Develop the mindset that every day is a new beginning for the rest of your life. Also, realize that each day you are alive is a gift you can either use or abuse. Every night before you go to sleep ask yourself if you used your gift wisely or did you just throw it away.

What happens to most of us is that we expect to wake up tomorrow and get another gift. As a result, we don't truly appreciate the limited time that we have here. Our lives are a gift and every day is precious since our days are numbered.

However, many of us waste the days given to us and don't come close to reaching our real potential. Instead of making the effort to improve, we make excuses and put off today what we can do tomorrow. Worse yet, we put off this year what we can do next year. Hence, the vicious cycle of broken New Year's resolutions and wasted opportunities to improve never ends.

Of course, there are a lot of things we are doing right. But, there are some things that each one of us could do better. So if you truly desire to improve, start living your life one day at a time. Every day do the best you can for that day. If you slip or have a bad day, wipe the slate clean before you go to sleep and make a firm intention to make better use of the gift you get tomorrow.

This mindset can be applied to your golf as well. Start playing golf one shot at a time and use the 4-step routine to learn from the feedback. Allow every golf shot to stand on its own. If you make a good shot, congratulate yourself. If not, make the necessary mechanical or mental adjustments, start fresh and don't carry any emotional baggage with you to the next shot.

Every day, like every golf shot, offers you the chance for a new beginning as long as you get up on the right side of the grass:)
