GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

Hi Mike,

"Just wanted to say thanks for you help. I purchased your books and CD over the summer, and I recently won my flight (6-10 handicap) at our club championship thanks to your mental tips.

"Our club championship is one day of stroke play qualifying and three days of match play. The most harrowing feat was the final match where I had a tough time finding my swing the front nine and was four down on the eleventh tee box. I was able to stay focused on the process, instead of the results, and played the next seven holes in even par to square the match on the 18th tee.

"I birdied the 18th to win the championship. What a great feeling it was to overcome such a deficit so late in the match.

"I think if I hadn't been reading and implementing your mental tips, I would have just thrown in the towel instead of fighting on and winning like I did."

Thanks again,

Mark

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Thoughts for the Holiday Season"

With the golf season slowing down and the Holiday Season upon us, now is a good time to take a breather, give thanks and reflect on the changes that we still need to make in our lives and the fun game of golf. If you are new to my newsletter and are anxious to read mental golf tips, there are a lot of tips in my archive to keep you busy during the holidays :-)

To those of you that have been reading my mental tip newsletters and using my book and CD, you have to realize by now that my unique mental training program WORKS for life as well as golf. The most important thing that I try to do is increase your awareness that there is a cause and effect for all of your thoughts and actions.

In the world of golf, the mind/body connection does not lie and the feedback is immediate. In the game of life, the rules are not as clear-cut and the feedback usually is much slower. The Holiday Season gives us time not only to give thanks for all of our blessings, but also to reflect on our lives and what we want to accomplish.

A good place to start is with the Thanksgiving holiday, which has already passed. However, make it a point between now and New Year’s Day to spend more time in your thoughts and prayers giving thanks for what blessings you currently have before asking for more favors or things.

It’s like the man who felt bad because he didn’t have any shoes until he met a man without any feet. Make sure that you take the time to give thanks for what you have, and smell the roses while you are still on the right side of the grass.

Have a Great Holiday Season.

Super Bonus... When you order my book and CD, you will receive my Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips book, which contains 75 of my favorite mental tips. If you read a tip a day, you will be amazed at how much it will help you to keep polishing your wheel and shoot lower scores.

super bonus

If you are not working on improving your mental game, you are playing golf with only half of the equipment. If you have not read The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf, your mental game will benefit greatly by seeing the whole picture instead of just pieces contained in these mental tips. My book gives you the tools to improve your mental game. My CD Polish the Wheel makes it much easier to keep using them.

"To develop a great mental game, it's critical to realize that your mental state affects the chemistry of your brain which in turn affects your ability to perform. Then, it's just a matter of reprogramming your mind to optimize your chemistry so you can play in the zone."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"HANDLING FRUSTRATIONS"

Golf can be a very frustrating game if you allow it to be. Here is a typical comment I received from an honest golfer, “I know that I get nervous when I'm having a good round then start screwing up as a result. I know I get frustrated when I'm having a bad round and it just gets worse”. Does this sound like someone you know?

Even professional golfers have their fair share of frustrations. Plus, the best golf courses are designed to be very difficult to emotionally frustrate golfers. Yes, Old Man Golf just loves to frustrate you and leave you talking or cursing to yourself. Yet, golfers can’t wait to play another round of golf. Don’t you love this game :-)

Frustration is easier to handle if you understand why it exists. It is caused by not accomplishing or getting what you want. You can reduce your frustrations by focusing on what you can achieve and then build on your successes, instead of dwelling on your failures or frustrations.

Here is a simple game plan that will reduce your frustrations. First, start by selecting only one or two things to work on at a time. Try to accomplish small goals initially. Once you can handle small goals, move on to larger ones.

Change takes time because your tape is very good at keeping you where you are. It is almost impossible to change over night, so there is no need to get frustrated. Just acknowledge that it will take time to change and take it one step at a time.

This will relieve a lot of frustration if you are honest with yourself and acknowledge your present limitations. As you gain more control over yourself and improve, you will become less frustrated and more confident in your ability to eventually succeed.

Here are some comments from one golfer who is learning to handle her frustrations. “I tried to be a hero in the crab grass and it cost me a bundle. I stayed calm, kept breathing, took the thoughts out and merely said, ‘See it, then do it.’ After I simplified things, my game was more productive and MUCH more enjoyable. Things will always get better, the steps in golf are just smaller.”

If you learn to walk before you run, you will be less frustrated and more successful in the long run.

Michael,

"How are you buddy? Things are fine out my way. In fact, I've recently been named Head Coach - Women's Golf Team at Jackson Communtiy College. And that's why I'm writing you.

"I plan to have them purchase your books or maybe I'll get them and make sure the girls all get them at once. I'll need 10 books and CD's. You're going to be a big part of my team's plans.

"I know how good your stuff is. I listen to you everyday during golf season and a couple of times a week during the off season. It seems like everytime I hear you, I get something new out of it. In fact, today I took pen and paper to you and listened to both sides. It's amazing.

"I'll keep in touch with you as we'll make the Mental Keys as much a part of our game as golf balls."

All my best,

Mark Jednak

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"You Have to Believe"

I would like to share an email correspondence about a question I received. You will find the following helpful in learning to trust the process.

"Michael, I have been using your mental keys for a while now, and combined with some focused practice, I am beginning to get back to my best playing. My confidence has returned and I am more focused on the "right" things. I have a question regarding how to deal with the days when I "don't have it".

"OK, so here's the question. I find that I can be process oriented and accept bad shots most of the time, but when it goes really bad, like the front 9 I just described, I need to find a way to "right the ship" sooner. I know the answer lies in trusting the process, but the hard cold reality that something funky is going on with your swing makes it very difficult. It's impossible to hit solid shots when your head is in front of the ball at impact, and subconsciously, when I know I haven't found the problem or the cure, trusting the process doesn't work for me. I still hit bad shots and it is very hard not to analyze and "fix it".

"I told you once before that I am a believer of Napoleon Hill's "whatever the mind of man can conceive, and BELIEVE, it can achieve". It's a catch 22, when I know something is wrong.... and I'm not sure what it is; I can't "believe"... That seems to be the heart of the problem for me. I have a club championship match tomorrow. Any suggestions?"

My response follows: Ed, the key is to continue in trusting the process. The process in this case is to trust your gut (subconscious) to come up with the answer for you. Since you are searching for a mechanical solution while you are playing, time is of the essence.

What you have to do is acknowledge that you need an answer to solve your problem. Second, you must free your mind of all negative emotions and keep firing away to the best of your ability. After each shot, if your mind is free of concern about the outcome from a scoring point of view, you will be able to allow your mind to objectively look at the feedback from your last shot.

It will use the feedback to come up with an adjustment for you to make. Then, fire away again. Use the feedback to see if "that" was the correct adjustment or what further fine tuning you need to make. Give your subconscious mind the freedom to fail (experiment). It will come up with the correct adjustment much sooner if you are not afraid to experiment or get frustrated.

Some times you will run out of time before you solve the riddle and have to work it out on the driving range. Other times you will solve the riddle after only one or two shots. It just depends upon how severe the mechanical adjustment is that needs to be made. Your gut will solve most of your problems very quickly if you allow it the freedom to find a solution without getting emotionally involved in the outcome.

Therefore, it is just another process that you have to trust. You have to BELIEVE that your mind has the ability to figure things out if you let it do its thing free of all negative emotions. While you are waiting for the riddle to be solved, by remaining positive the rest of your game will remain intact. Otherwise, if you become negative, it will affect your entire game and everything will fall apart. I hope this helps in time for tomorrow.

"Michael, thanks for taking the time to respond. You've made my day. I have enough confidence in my knowledge of the game and my abilities that I can "believe" I'll fix it. In fact, that's actually what happened in the round I described to you ...without realizing it ...I just went through my routine ...insured my setup was correct, and used "feel" keys to "right the ship". At least now I'll have a process to follow if something goes haywire today. I'm playing the guy I beat in the finals last year, so I'll need to be mentally tough."

Ed, I am glad I was able to help. Not that it really matters, but let me know how you do today. Winning or losing is not the issue. The issue is what did you learn today to be better tomorrow. Winning is the result of doing the process better than your competitor.

"Michael, The good news is, I won my match 4 & 3. The better news is that I didn't have my A game today ...I was blocking, pulling, and slicing my way around the course...but managed to make a few key birdies, and several scrambling pars, and dropped a few bombs on the putting green.

"Your advice about trusting my subconscious to "analyze problems and come up with the answer" was a key. I figured out what was wrong, fixing it was a challenge though because it was 2 things...and managed to get through the match.

"Another key thing that I may have mentioned to you previously, is that I have been blessed with the ability to be mentally tough when it's necessary. Your TMK, however, has given me more of a context to recognize what I was doing right...and wrong. It has actually added to my mental toughness because I am becoming a believer in your mental process and I have something definitive to fall back on. The more it works, the better it gets ...guess my tape is getting re-programmed ...smile"

Ed, Way to go. It's always good to see that the process pay off. What is so great about the system is that the mind/body feedback loop puts you in a box. You just can't get away with any negativity, especially when you are going for the Gold. All you have to do is be honest with yourself and make the mental and mechanical adjustments. But, you have to BELIEVE!

"Mike, I thought I'd let you know how the final match went. 21 holes...and as you can imagine, over that length of time there were many opportunities to "test" your game and your mental approach. Several "if you miss this putt...you will lose the match", and "how will I explain how I lost this match", and "wow, it will be great to be the champ 3 years in a row" " All the things that affect everyone. Well, your process was my "life preserver". I stayed in the present, most of the time, and I dealt with the fear of losing, and I managed to overcome the "dips" that jeopardized my goal and I was the winner on the 21st hole.

"There was one interesting moment that I know you will understand. Approaching the green on the 20th hole, my opponent said to me "well, no matter what happens, we've had a good match, you can't do much better than extra holes".....I knew immediately that my desire was greater than his. Extra holes wasn't the goal for me .....winning was. It's even similar to one of your examples. Thought you'd be interested.

"Thanks again for all the sound advice. You'll start getting some orders from here. Some of my friends are becoming believers."

Ed, Thanks for the update. I used our correspondence in my mental tip newsletter to help illustrate that these principles work in combat and are not just wishful thinking. Many golfers are afraid to let go of the outcome and trust the process.

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Relaxed and Poised"

One of the keys to playing well is the ability to relax and play without stress and tension. Once you are relaxed, the key to playing at your best is your ability to become poised to enter the zone. This is quite an undertaking for the average golfer, but poise under pressure is what all great golfers have in common. This trance like state is what they love, and live for.

Unfortunately, many golfers find it hard to relax because they are too stressed out trying to play well and shoot a low score. Some golfers who can relax complain that it is hard to play well because they are too relaxed. That's because they don't take the next step and get poised before executing their shot.

Let's quickly review the four-step routine in "The Mental Keys"; 1) feedback response, 2) relax, 3) preparation and 4) instinctive execution. Once you make your shot whether it was good or bad, learn from the feedback. Since it's over and is now just history, take the time to clear your mind and relax before you prepare for your next shot.

Now that you are relaxed, it's time to prepare for the shot you're facing. First, you have to take in all of the inputs necessary for your mind to calculate the requirements to execute the shot at hand. Then, it is time to become poised so you can prepare your mind and body to execute while in the zone, which is when you play at your best.

So how do you become poised? The answer to this question is the key to excellence in golf and life. Once you are relaxed and have taken in the inputs, you focus intently on your target expecting to hit it without any concern about the outcome. While doing this, slow down and take your time. It's similar to putting yourself into a trance like state of mind. By making this practice the most important part of your preshot routine, you will start to get a feel for what is it like to be poised and ready to execute in the zone.

You will be in the present without any thoughts about the past or future. You will not have a care in the world except your total focus on your target. Your mind will have its full intention on hitting the target without being attached to achieving the outcome. Your brain's chemistry will be at its optimum and you will be poised to execute your shot instinctively.

It takes time and effort to train yourself to become poised. Once you master this art, your game will never be the same because you will fully realize that controlling your state of mind is the key to increasing your ability and probability of making the shot. (You will benefit greatly by rereading my tip "Trust Your Triangle" in my "Mental Golf Tips" book.)

So if you want to lower your score, forget about scoring. Focus on becoming relaxed and poised so your subconscious can do the work for you. This is what great players do. If you doubt this, just ask Tiger.

GOLFERS LOCKER ROOM BULLETIN BOARD

Hello Mike!

"My name is Tim Z.... I am a Class A PGA Head Professional.

"Being the son of a Class A PGA Professional almost assured that I would be a decent player, if I had any desire at all. I played college golf (made All Conference my senior year) and when it came time to try Tour Q school, I just didn’t think I had the goods.

"Loving the game as I do, I decided to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a Club Professional. I have never regretted that decision, but now that I’m 49 and counting, I am considering taking a shot at Champions Tour Q school.

"I have used the Mental Keys (book and CD) since January of 2002. (I’ve got an autographed copy of your book!) During that time I have won numerous Pro – Ams, made three holes in one, and won PGA Chapter Player of the Year in’04,’05,’06,’07, & ’08. I finished second the standings this year, losing by only a few points; points I lost while thinking of the outcome during rounds instead of focusing on the process of each and every shot.

"I have qualified and played in several Nationwide (Hogan, Nike, Buy.com) tour events through the Section, and it is there that this phenomenon seems most likely to manifest itself, although as I related earlier, it cropped up during quite a few tournament rounds this year.

"I listen to the CD religiously…both before and after rounds…and I don’t hide from bad rounds. ( I just don’t like them!) I have reread the book many, many times. The daily affirmation evolved into my own daily practice of prayer and meditation. I know I’m on the right track; my life and game are much more satisfying.

"Qualifying for the Champions Tour is my new outcome goal…do I just need to keep Polishing the Wheel until I can do it (stay in the present) every single shot, or am I overlooking something? I’m sure you don’t have enough of my information to give me “the answer”, but how would you approach a player who had “it”, lost “it” and needs “it” back pretty quickly!!

"I know I have all the shots necessary to compete and win, so how do I develop unwavering trust? Pretty simple process I’m sure! Thank you for your time and The Mental Keys!!"

After a phone conversation with Tim, he agreed that his thinking about the outcome was taking him out of his game. He agreed to stop thinking about the outcome, and to trust the process. A day later I got the following email from Tim.

"After we hung up I played two balls on a 210 yd par 3 and 2 balls on a 543 yd par 5. My score was 2-2-4-3!!!!! I can do this."

Thank you so much, TZ

It makes my day when you email me your success stories or ask for my help after you have read my book and listened to my CD.

Don't be shy. It is always good to share positive feedback with your fellow golfers. Your generosity in sharing your experiences with others will help inspire them to keep polishing their wheel and help you sink an extra putt or two :-)

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Thinkin Is Stinkin"

What are you thinking about when you are performing at your best in anything you do? If you are honest with yourself, you will realize that the answer is always the same. You are not thinking. You are operating on instinct!

So how do you train your mind to stop thinking in order to perform on instinct? You do it in the four stages of learning which are the unconscious incompetent, the conscious incompetent, the conscious competent, and the subconscious competent.

When you start learning a new skill, you are an unconscious competent. You are not even aware of what you are doing wrong. Once you begin to become aware of what you are doing wrong, you move up to the stage of being a conscious incompetent.

Through practice and lots of mistakes, you gradually become proficient at your new skill. You know what you are doing and you can do it well. Congratulations, you are now a conscious competent and ready for the final stage of peak performance or being in the 'zone' as a subconscious competent.

This is the tricky part because a subconscious competent performs without thinking or having concern about the outcome. It’s a catch 22. If you want the outcome, you can’t have it because it will bring you back into thinking about the results. If you don’t care about the outcome, you can have it because you mind is free to perform without fear of failure.

Once you become a subconscious competent, what keeps you from remaining there is that you forget what got you there in the first place. In order to become a conscious competent, you gave yourself permission to fail over and over until you got it right. Now, that you are competent you expect yourself to be perfect and never fail or make a mistake.

Well, it isn’t going to happen, especially in golf. Golf is such a precision sport that it is mechanically impossible to repeatedly strike the ball perfect every time. Without giving yourself permission to fail, failure to hit a good shot will pull you out of the zone so fast it will make your head spin. What is worse, it will make you start thinking about what went wrong and keep you from getting back into the zone.

If you dwell on your failure long enough, you will start pressing and find yourself back at stage one of being an unconscious incompetent. This time your incompetence will be caused by negative emotions and distorted brain chemistry that will rob your body from its natural flow and rhythm. You will not even know why your performance stinks.

You have to go back to square one and give yourself permission to fail all over again. Since your skill level is very high, you may not fail very often. But, it is important to trust the process, and allow yourself the freedom to fail so you can stop thinking about the outcome. After all, thinkin is stinkin.

"Playing in the Present"

The hardest thing to communicate to a golfer is the importance of changing their world view from outcome to process thinking because they have been conditioned from birth by society to judge their success from their results. It takes a leap of faith to trust that perfecting the process, which includes staying in the present and not thinking, will produce the results one is striving to achieve.

It's like trying to explain the Zen koan of the "sound of one hand clapping" used to train Zen Buddhist monks to abandon ultimate dependence on reason, and force them into gaining sudden intuititive enlightenment.

Would you like to increase your concentration, and keep from losing your focus during a round of golf? Would you like to play without fear and being nervous? Would you like to eliminate mental mistakes and mental collapses when you have the lead, or are shooting a great round? Of course, you would. By training your mind to play in the present without concern of the outcome, you greatly increase your ability to do so.

Playing in the present is exactly what it is - the present. You are in the present when you are without any thoughts or concerns about the past or future. Nothing else exists except the present, and the truth of your circumstances. Your past brought you into the present, and how well you do in the present will create your future. Any thoughts about the past or future take you out of the present, and affect your ability to perform to your full potential in the moment, which is all you have.

Explaining the present is the easy part. The hard part is to fully REALIZE that the present is the only thing that matters because it is the only thing that exists. Everything else is just a fairy tale that exists in your imagination or desires.

Golfers with a strong mental game realize that the present is all that they can control. They have learned to play in the present without concern about the past or future outcomes. They realize the power of just being in the moment with the full intention and expectation to accomplish their desires without attachment to the results. When they are at their best, they play on instinct and trust their subconscious to make it happen for them.

Learning to play in the present on instinct requires time and effort. That is why experience is such a priceless commodity. Because when all else fails, the truth emerges from one's experiences if you are honest with yourself. By training your mind to play in the present, you can shorten the time required to experience the power of being free to play on instinct and in the zone. Unfortunately, many golfers never learn to stop dwelling on their past and future outcomes. How about you?

The trick (or mental key) to being in the present is to allow yourself to learn from the feedback each shot provides without your ego being involved in the outcome. By being honest about your present mechanical, strategic, physical, and mental limitations, you will increase your awareness of what you can do to improve your present abilities. Then, it becomes a question of how strong your desire is to make the necessary changes or adjustments to improve because the more you focus on the process, the less you will be concerned about the past or future outcomes.

If you don't have the desire or time to do the work to improve, that's OK. Just make sure that you play in the present without thinking or concern about the outcome so you can get the most mileage from your present limitations. If you do, you will shoot lower scores.

FYI - Making "The Mental Keys" Daily Affirmation a major part of your life is one of the best ways to train yourself to be in the present.

Michael,

"I have the passion and work hard at improving my game. I am 25 hcp and the reason is short game, most the 20 yards in and around green. My driver and middle and especially my wedges are above average, I leak stroke due to chipping and hitting the 40 yard shot.

"But thanks to you, I keep greasing the wheel and I work hard on the process and believe it works and works well. I just started practicing again on the short simple but finess shots around the green.

"With working the process and using my passion I at 61 years old will regain my confidence and realize the process is the KEY..."

MENTAL TIP by MICHAEL ANTHONY

"Experiencing Non-Thinking"

When I work with a golfer, or any athlete, I always ask: "What are you thinking about when you are performing at your best?" The answer is always the same: "I'm not thinking." They are operating on instinct. If you ask yourself that same question, I'll bet your answer will be the same: "I'm not thinking when I perform at my best."

In spite of the above, I get emails asking me: "How does one forget about the outcome - or accomplish such a 'I couldn't care less about the outcome' state when I want to win, birdie, par, look good, or whatever? Some part of me always knows I really do want to win. Pretend you don't want to win and you'll win? Doesn't sound like something you would agree with? So why does reading your book or listening to your CD every time I play help me enter this 'hoot less' state?"

It's not that you care less about the outcome, but you greatly increase your probability of success to achieve the outcome you desire by not thinking about it. Just expect to be successful if everything goes right, trust your triangle and focus on seeing the ball being hit without thinking about the outcome. Another way to increase your probability of success is to take lessons and work on improving your mechanics so you don't have to think about them while you are playing.

The ability to clear your mind of all thoughts takes time and mental training to accomplish. It has taken me years to be able to accomplish this and I'm still working at it because negative thoughts still pop up. When they do, I take a deep breath, talk to myself, tell my thoughts to go away, and then go about my business without thinking about the outcome.

I don't make all of my shots, but I make a lot of them. The one's that I don't make, I don't worry about because I'm not perfect and I'm willing to allow the outcome to happen - good or bad. Then I learn from the feedback how to improve. This process works for me, and will work for you if you work at it.

It's impossible to explain to your mind the experience of being in the present without thinking about the outcome because your mind's job is to think. It's your spirit that experiences non-thinking. It took Eugen Herrigel, the author of "Zen in the Art of Archery," six years of Zen training to experience the experience of non-attachment to the outcome.

My unique mental training program gives your spirit very exact sign posts to follow that will allow you to experience the experience of non-thinking without taking six years of intense study under a Zen Master. The proof is in the pudding. If you read the testimonials on my website, you will find that many golfers have experienced that experience by following the sign posts explained in my book. My CD "Polish the Wheel" makes it easier to follow them.

The choice is yours. You can keep thinking about the outcome or use "The Mental Keys" to experience the experience of non-thinking and lower scores.
