The Masters

Well it was an exciting Masters this year and congratulations to Adam Scott on his first Major Championship.

Out of all the tournament golf I've watched over the years, Caberra's approach shot to the 18th green at Augusta may have been the greatest shot under pressure I've ever seen!
Going into the Masters my picks were Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker, they came close, but close doesn't win golf tournaments, or anything else.

In this months newsletter I will be writing about how you can start minimizing the dispersion of your shots.  As they get tighter you will find your shots going more towards target instead of moving away from it!

Controlling Your Golf Ball

Everyday on the lesson tee someone tells me that they want to hit it straight.  I then ask them if they know how many players on the PGA Tour hit it straight.  Their answer, ZERO!

Well...if zero players on Tour hit it straight then why would you want to?

Their answers vary but the bottom line is this.  Instead of spending your practice time trying to do something that is extremely rare and difficult, why not spend your time learning to control the curvature of the golf ball.

If you are someone that consistently hits a pull slice - a ball that starts left and then curves PAST the target - work on minimizing the amount of curve.  Basically, if your clubface is pointed left at Impact the ball will start in that direction.  The amount of curve is the difference between the face angle, relative to the swing path.

Take a look at this graphic to see what I mean.

In the "Pull Slice" image you can see that the path of the clubhead is left of target and that the clubface is also left of target.  (The clubface is about 1/2 the difference of the path and target line.)

To minimize this curve you would need to narrow the gap between the clubface and clubhead path.  Experiment with this until you can minimize the curve and get the ball curving toward target but not past it.
If you are having issues with this concept it may be time for you to visit me here in Kansas City at Tiffany Greens Golf Club!

Until next time, keep it in the short grass!
